This tale was not written by a storyteller at all. Sergei Timofeevich Aksakov (1791-1859) remained in the history of literature as a prose writer, publicist and memoirist, theater and literary critic, censor, public figure. And the tale “The Scarlet Flower”, which glorified him more than all other works, was made by the author as a kind of appendix to the large autobiographical story “Childhood of Bagrov the Grandson”.
The story is told in the first person, and the hero talks about how he first heard this fairy tale. The boy was very sick and could not sleep at night. The housekeeper Pelageya was called to him, and night after night she retold him the same wonderful story about a kind girl, a terrible and unfortunate monster and a scarlet flower, because of which it all started.
What affects the fairy tale
A rich merchant is going overseas on business and asks his three daughters what gifts to bring them. The eldest asks to get her a golden crown, more beautiful thannot in the world, the middle one asks for a miracle mirror in which everything looks beautiful. And the youngest wants a scarlet flower. The father is confused: he knows that there is that golden crown, hidden in the pantry of one overseas princess, and he heard about a wonderful mirror, the daughter of the Persian king has one - he will get everything. But what kind of flower - he cannot comprehend: how to find out that this particular scarlet flower is needed by his beloved little daughter.
Found a merchant in distant countries gifts for older daughters. Finally found on a deserted island and a flower for the youngest. Just plucked it - everything around darkened. And the owner of the flower appeared - a monster of the forest. He punished the merchant with eternal captivity, but took pity on him and let him say goodbye to his daughters. The youngest daughter secretly put a magic ring on her finger and, instead of her father, went to the island to the monster and returned the scarlet flower to its place. And that monster turned out to be an unfortunate fellow, bewitched by an evil sorceress. She sentenced him to remain in a terrible guise until the maiden loves him for a good heart. And so it happened: Alenka (and in the cartoon - Nastenka) took pity and fell in love with him, and he again became a handsome fellow. This is a brief plot of the tale told by S. T. Aksakov.
"The Scarlet Flower" on screen and on stage
Perhaps the most beloved cartoon of several generations appeared on the TV screen in 1952. Old drawn Soviet cartoons today are watched with a mixed feeling of tenderness and nostalgia. The fairy tale "The Scarlet Flower" has found its embodimentand in the fairy tale film directed by Irina Povolotskaya, filmed in 1977. But the most legendary production was the performance of the same name by the Moscow Pushkin Theater. In 2012 there was an anniversary - the 4000th! - show performance. Where does the beauty and the beast story, well-known in world literature, become so popular? The reason is obvious: there are things that are imperishable, eternal, which never become obsolete. These are well-known truths: good always triumphs over evil, and the most evil spells are powerless against love and a pure heart. This is also told by a fairy tale written by a completely different storyteller S. T. Aksakov.
