Space for filmmakers is an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. It has the space to tell a story in any genre, unattainable horizons for directors and actors, the depth of meanings and philosophy loved by screenwriters. This opportunity for creative realization did not leave indifferent director Christian Alvart and screenwriter Travis Millow, who, with the support of the famous producer Paul W. S. Anderson, filmed the film "Pandorum". The reviews of the project are diverse, its IMDb rating is 6.80. B. Foster, D. Quaid, A. Traue and the athlete, and now the actor Kung Le, are involved in the main roles of the picture. The filming process took place in Berlin at the end of the summer of 2008. The world premiere of the tape took place in September 2009.
Paranoid Space Horror
The plot of the movie "Pandorum" (2009) is rather gloomy and tragic. planet earth onon the verge of destruction, the last attempt to save the human race is the launch of the colossal spaceship "Elysium", almost by Neil Blomkamp. With 60,000 people on board, the spacecraft is heading towards the planet Tanis. While everyone is in suspended animation, two soldiers suddenly wake up to find that the ship is turning into an ominous graveyard for its passengers. Many people, including members of the crew, died because mysterious monsters are making a bloody feast on the ship. After it turns out that they are not the only awakened ones, several dozen more people are hiding in the giant bowels of the spaceship. The worst thing is that these are the last representatives of human civilization in the vast space.
Project creators
The creation of the "Through the Horizon" tape of Paul W. S. Anderson with space did not end. He took the liberty of acting as the producer of the film "Pandorum". If everyone has heard about Paul Anderson, as well as about the actors Ben Foster and Denis Quaid, then the choice of the director of the project surprised the majority. One of the first works of Christian Alvart, Antibodies (2005), which was announced almost as a twin of the cult Seven, turned out to be a boring psychological drama of unknown origin. After there was a picture "Case No. 39" with Rene Zellweger in the title role. Therefore, critics, going to the pre-premiere show, expressed fears that the director could develop a “conveyor belt syndrome”. Fortunately, this did not happen. According to reviews, the film "Pandorum" (2009) is a piece goods, competentlydelivered, without excesses and with taste. Travis Millow's script is balanced, structured and unconventional.
Energy Horror
Reviews of the audience the film "Pandorum" is mostly praised. Although, many reviewers admit, in all honesty, that everything becomes clear from the first frames. However, as was clear in Boyle's "Inferno" and Duncan Jones' "Moon 2112", these films are worthy and honest.
Christian Alvart's work is a well-crafted sci-fi horror with bloodthirsty monsters in the spirit of James Cameron's Abyss, not so much Event Horizon. Only events are developing not under water, but in the dark corridors of the space station.
The action develops gradually, but from the first minutes of timing unobtrusively involving the viewer in the atmosphere of the picture. The main characters, waking up, understand little, the viewer, like the characters, remains out of control. The authors present details such as amnesia, hinting that complete uncertainty is yet to come. Everything is complicated by the danger of pandorum - a mental disorder that occurs in people due to a long stay in deep space. Some reviewers, not ignoring spoilers, in reviews of the film "Pandorum" note that the action begins to apparently accelerate after the entry of Ben Foster's hero into the ventilation shaft. The creators throw up all the new details of space travel, which are frankly frightening.
Not the roar of the spaceport…
Director ChristianAlvert, according to film experts, expressed in reviews of the film "Pandorum", observes absolutely all genre traditions, including action elements: spaceship locations have a claustrophic effect, monsters are terribly nimble and toothy. The director successfully maneuvers between different genres. Light episodes, memories of heroes about childhood and family, are radically different from skirmishes in the gloomy compartments of the ship. And not the color scheme, brightness, but also the deep meaning, purity. It looks like they are taken from a completely different movie. At the same time, scenes of memories are organically inserted into the narrative, emphasizing the contrast between the world of which there will never be and reality.
An attempt to reincarnate a forgotten genre
Naturally, the above plot cannot be called revolutionary and innovative. There are constant references to films such as Inferno, Prometheus, Alien, Pitch Black and Through the Horizon - films similar to Pandorum (2009). The film by Christian Alvart does contain elements of these masterpieces, but the overall concept of the project remains original. This is helped by thriller elements, atmospheric scenery and the excellent work of cinematographer Wedigo von Schulzendorff. In each episode of the chase, the main characters heed common sense and do not enter into open confrontation with the superior forces of monsters. The short skirmishes really look brutal, and at the climax, the cameraman outdoes himself with a string of truly incredible angles.
Cast
In the film "Pandorum" (2009), actors and roles were selected for each other by types under the vigilant control of Paul Anderson himself. The casting of the picture earned the highest praise from critics. Ben Foster ("Hostage") in the image of a die-hard corporal Nolan Bauer is afraid of what is happening no less than the audience, Dennis Quaid ("Legion", "Cobra Throw" as Payton periodically falls into psychosis, Antje Traue ("Man of Steel"), reincarnated as Nadia looks a lot like Mila Yovochiv from Resident Evil.
The absence of pathos and moralizing is also a big plus for the picture. Although the characters are not particularly up to heroism, it would be crazy not to survive here. And the plot, despite its linearity, sometimes throws up such turns that I want to give a standing ovation.
Spoiler alert
Most of the timing of the tape's characters wander around the ship, they are afraid of the terrible, the mutants do indecency on several levels of the ship, in general - I want to go into suspended animation. But the final plot somersault will definitely surprise everyone. The ship, it turns out, has long reached the surface of the planet Tanis, just someone is not in a hurry to notify all crew members and passengers about this.
And in general, as the authors of the reviews emphasize, the film "Pandorum" fits perfectly into the current mainstream trend: progress has reached unprecedented miracles, so it will not be good for sure.
