Goncharov has to return to Simbirsk, the city where he was born, against his will. He receives a letter from the governor and works for him as a secretary for 11 months. Then he leaves for St. Petersburg and enters the MinistryFinance, to the Department of Foreign Trade as an interpreter. And then a very important event occurs, Goncharov's chronological table includes a unique phenomenon. He is one of the few writers of that time who managed to travel around the world.

Ivan Alexandrovich was appointed secretary of General Putyatin in 1852. And he goes on a trip with him for two and a half years. Then he landed on the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk and traveled all over Russia by land. From the very first day of the expedition, Goncharov kept travel notes. They are published first in separate fragments, then the collection of stories “The Frigate Pallada” is published, which is now called a novel.

Returning from a trip, Ivan Alexandrovich enters the service of a censor. At that time, the attitude towards people of this profession was very unattractive, and Goncharov soon left this job. However, in 1862 he returned as the editor-in-chief of the Severnaya Pochta newspaper, as he had to live on something. After some time, he is appointed adviser for the press, and he becomes the main censor. He firmly stands on conservative positions, supports the foundations of the state, which is why he quarrels with many like-minded people in the literary craft. In 1867, Ivan Aleksandrovich finally retired and finished writing The Cliff, his last novel.

In 1844, at the age of 30, Ivan Goncharov conceived the novel "An Ordinary Story", and three years later it was published in the Sovremennik magazine.

In 1849, in March, "Oblomov's Dream" is published in a literary collection with illustrations. In the same year, Goncharov travels to Simbirsk and seriously thinks about the novel. And only 10 years later the novel "Oblomov" is published in "Notes of the Fatherland", divided into four issues.
