Spends almost eight boring years at the Potters' School, because he is not interested in commerce at all. Finally, he persuades his mother to apply to the school, leaves him and enters the Faculty of Literature at Moscow University in August 1831. She has been studying there for three years. From this moment on, Goncharov's biography changes from boring to creative. He meets many writers. At the same time, Belinsky, Herzen, Ogarev, Lermontov, Turgenev, Aksakov are studying at the university.
Goncharov's life after school
Goncharov has to return to Simbirsk, the city where he was born, against his will. He receives a letter from the governor and works for him as a secretary for 11 months. Then he leaves for St. Petersburg and enters the MinistryFinance, to the Department of Foreign Trade as an interpreter. And then a very important event occurs, Goncharov's chronological table includes a unique phenomenon. He is one of the few writers of that time who managed to travel around the world.
Ivan Alexandrovich was appointed secretary of General Putyatin in 1852. And he goes on a trip with him for two and a half years. Then he landed on the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk and traveled all over Russia by land. From the very first day of the expedition, Goncharov kept travel notes. They are published first in separate fragments, then the collection of stories “The Frigate Pallada” is published, which is now called a novel.
Goncharov's chronological table cannot be complete without mentioning his work as a censor.
Goncharov-censor
Returning from a trip, Ivan Alexandrovich enters the service of a censor. At that time, the attitude towards people of this profession was very unattractive, and Goncharov soon left this job. However, in 1862 he returned as the editor-in-chief of the Severnaya Pochta newspaper, as he had to live on something. After some time, he is appointed adviser for the press, and he becomes the main censor. He firmly stands on conservative positions, supports the foundations of the state, which is why he quarrels with many like-minded people in the literary craft. In 1867, Ivan Aleksandrovich finally retired and finished writing The Cliff, his last novel.
Chronologic altable of Goncharov the novelist

In 1849, in March, "Oblomov's Dream" is published in a literary collection with illustrations. In the same year, Goncharov travels to Simbirsk and seriously thinks about the novel. And only 10 years later the novel "Oblomov" is published in "Notes of the Fatherland", divided into four issues.
In 1869, the novel "The Precipice" was published. On this, the chronological table of Goncharov as a writer can be completed. This will be his last major work. After that, he will write only "Better late than never" - an essay where he explains all his creative successes and failures, how and why he wrote.
