In 2017, the main prize of the Berlin Film Festival was given to the Hungarian project directed by Ildiko Enyedi, known to compatriots for the film “My Twentieth Century” with Oleg Yankovsky. According to the voting results, the tape has four awards: the Golden Bear, the FIPRESCI Grand Prix, the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the Audience Award. Apparently, each of these meetings of critics and viewers wanted to celebrate the creation of a project that mercilessly and extremely accurately conveys the feeling of numbness that is relevant to modern society. Reviews of "About Body and Soul" has extremely favorable, IMDb rating of the film: 8.00.
Brand style
Ildiko Enyedi hasn't made a feature film for the past 20 years. The director was engaged in the creation of television films, short films and documentaries. “On Body and Soul” reviews of filmmakers are positioned as a return to big cinema, demonstrating that the director has not lost a bit of her corporate identity: programmatic detachment from politics, playing with dreams, mirror reflections and doubles, the search for herself and the love of the main characters, and most importantly -very grasping female look at the surrounding reality. It is no coincidence that "On the Body and Soul" is characterized by critics as a painful and sublimely poetic film.
The inspiration for the creation of Enyedi's project was a poem by the Hungarian poet Agnes Nemes Nagy, which colorfully tells about the passion that actually rages inside every inhabitant, even the most detached one.
Perfect women's cinema
According to the assessment of film experts, announced in reviews of the film "On Body and Soul", the picture is perfectly cut and sewn, sometimes even too much, because the author's hints and precisely placed accents make the story too predictable. But this captivates the viewer, who sometimes likes to feel no more stupid than the creators of the project.
Many viewers in the reviews of the film "On Body and Soul" call its main advantage the incomprehensible game of animals. The story opens with a scene-panorama of a snow-covered forest with its inhabitants - a majestic pair of deer. The male, who has found food for his girlfriend, watches how she chews, after which they go to the pond, drink, periodically touching their wet noses. This serene episode is abruptly replaced by a scene in a slaughterhouse, the ongoing action does not spare the nerves of the audience. Enyedi unvarnishes the bloody process of turning cows into beef.
Storyline Summary
A new employee Maria (Alexandra Borbey) comes to the slaughterhouse, filling a vacancyquality inspector. She reminds her colleagues of an alien. A woman perceives herself as an insensitive robot. The heroine is endowed with an outstanding ability to memorize, rational thinking, while completely devoid of sentimentality. She is the opposite of her leader, Endre (Geza Morsani), a wise, lonely man with a paralyzed left hand and an adult daughter. The boss, as usual, tries to establish contact with a new employee, but runs into the icy alienation of the newly minted quality inspector. Soon, a psychologist arrives at the production facility, who, in the course of questioning the workers, discovers that these two are regularly haunted by dreams involving the pair of deer described above.
In the narration of the tape "On Body and Soul", the reviews of experts focus on many unpredictable turns, but note that it is most interesting to observe the skill of a wonderful acting duet. The creative tandem of Geza Morchani and Alexandra Borbey is endowed with truly animal organic matter.
Realism and humanity
The film "On Body and Soul" is praised by the audience, as are the reviews of film critics. At the same time, many authors argue that in some places it is quite difficult to watch the tape. Ildiko Enyedi's project, from an ethical point of view, is an impeccable gesture. The creators, having infiltrated a real-life slaughterhouse, filmed the everyday production process with the permission of the management and employees. At the same time, not a single animal was harmed in the name of filming, on the contrary, dyingAnimal suffering has been immortalized in a humanist film that there is no difference between deer, cows and humans. Both those and others, and the third are sometimes doomed to loneliness and, as a result, to death. No one will come to their rescue. Only the look of another or the lens of a camera can briefly stir the soul of a body sentenced to suffering.
Specific filming process
Auxiliary effect of the film is given by the author's shooting style. The visualization is extremely minimalistic. Therefore, if it were not for her beauty, it could be argued that the director and cameraman Mate Herbai decided to adhere to the rules of Dogma-95, according to which imaginary actions are prohibited, music is used if it is in the frame, shooting exclusively on location, action - Here and now. In addition, the characters are invariably in closed spaces of the room - at home and at work, staring lonely at the monitor of a laptop or TV. The street is visible only in the reflection of shop windows, hidden by evening twilight, or the landscape is very blurred.
With all this movie "On the Body and Soul" reviews do not characterize as a metaphysical parable, the authors in the reviews tend to classify the film as an everyday tragicomedy. Indeed, there is a lot of funny and absurd, accurate, sentimental and touching in the tape.
