One Day is a 2011 film directed by Lone Scherfig based on the novel of the same name by David Nicholls. The main roles in the melodrama were played by Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. What does the picture tell about and what feedback did it receive from the audience?

Short film plot

After the premiere of the film "One Day", the reviews for the melodrama were mixed. This was the very case when the opinions of professional critics and ordinary viewers did not fundamentally coincide.

The picture tells about the fate of two friends - Emma and Dexter. They met at a college prom and, despite their very different personalities, found a lot in common.

As the years passed, each of the main characters led their own lives. But at the most important and turning points, they supported each other. For Emma, the relationship with Dexter from the very beginning meant more than just friendship. But Dexter stubbornly ignored this and realized how blind he was only when he lost everything, including Emma's favor.

Dexter was desperately trying to make up for lost time, and it seemed that he was already close to the goal. But fateordered differently…

Anne Hathaway ("Interstellar", "Les Misérables") is one of the most prominent actresses of our time. It seems that there is no role that Hathaway could not cope with: in her piggy bank of images there are princesses and superwomen, swindlers and respectable girls, frivolous screen stars and notorious sociopaths.

The image of the writer Emma Morley was also a success for the actress. Humanity and devotion, the ability to empathize and truly love - that's what makes the viewer feel sympathy for the heroine of Hathaway from the very first minutes of the melodrama "One Day".

Reviews from professional reviewers about the performance of Jim Sturgess ("Cloud Atlas", "Geostorm") - Anne's partner on the set - were also mostly positive. He perfectly fell into the image of a young dandy who does not stand the test of fame and the sweet life. The hero of Sturgess goes through a series of transformations during the film, becomes a real man.

But if the acting was great, then why did the critics dislike so much about Lone Scherfig's film?

Out of 100% reviews written by critics from different countries, only 37% were positive. Claims were mainly expressed to the quality of the work of the director and the film crew as a whole.

For example, a columnist from the Kommersant newspaper expressed the opinion that the plot was worked out superficially, and the causal relationship of actionsheroes were poorly traced. The melodrama was "diagnosed" as a vulgarized tragic misalliance.

A critic from Time-Out magazine felt that the director and screenwriter lacked the skill to convey the sharp and subtle humor that is present in the novel by David Nicholls. The lightness and irony of the story was lost without a trace.

As for the audience's perception of the film "One Day", the audience's feedback on the melodrama was more than satisfactory. On Kinopoisk, the film is rated 7.7 out of 10, and on IMDb it is 7 out of 10, which means that Eastern European audiences liked the film even more than viewers from the US or Western Europe.

Despite the director's blunders, the audience managed to "read" the sincere desire of the actors to convey the difficult story of Emma and Dexter's relationship. Perhaps some of the viewers recognized themselves in the heroes of the melodrama: we all have ever experienced failures in our careers and personal lives, sometimes we also choose inappropriate partners and suffer from unrequited love.

The main thing is that after watching the picture "One Day" you want to discard all prejudices, live a bright and fulfilling life today, without wasting time, as the main characters of the melodrama, unfortunately, did - Emma and Dexter.
