For those who don't know, manga is a Japanese comic. Its main features are the original drawing (of course, in anime style) and the way of reading - from right to left horizontally. To learn about the novelties of the world of manga, there are special printed publications that publish announcements, one of them is Weekly Shonen Jump. For the first time, such famous manga as "Naruto", "One Piece" and others appeared on the pages of this magazine.
About the magazine
Shonen Jump is a weekly manga magazine. The publishing house Shueisha is engaged in the issue, the magazine first saw the world in 1968 and since then its popularity has only been growing. We can say that this is the oldest publication in the country with an audience of 2.7 million readers. The main target audience is guys aged 12 to 18, in fact, this is where the name Shonen comes from. In Japan, the word "shonen" is used for children over 10 years old and teenagers. But to be honest, the magazine is very popular among girls of the same age.
Every week on Monday or Saturday, new manga chapters appear on the pages of Shonen Jump, coming out in Japan. Numerous titles published on the pages of the magazine have received an anime adaptation.
Historical information
As already mentioned, the magazine saw the world in 1968. Immediately after the release of the first issue, he enters into a fierce battle with Weekly Shonen Magazine and Shonen Sunday, which also specialize in shounen manga. Against such competitors, Shonen Jump has no chance, only the publishers were not warned about this, so in 1933 the number of subscribers was 6.4 million. Perhaps now the number of readers has decreased due to the development and popularization of the Internet, but it remains popular both in Japan and beyond.
Creating celebrities
Throughout the history of Shonen Jump, about 70% of mangaka became popular thanks to this magazine. To be published on the pages of this publication is considered very honorable for the artist, because more than two million readers can evaluate his work at once.
Although there was a time when many parent organizations in Japan were outraged by the existence of such a magazine. They believed that such a publication had a negative impact on children. True, things did not go beyond words, Shonen Jump still pleases readers with new works. Famous artists such as Toriyama Akira (Dragon Ball), Oda Eiichiro (One Piece), Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto), Akira Amano (Mafia Teacher Reborn), Tamura Ryuhei (Felzepus”) and others.
Worldrecognition
In Japan, Weekly Shonen Jump is a weekly event, but in countries near and far, it comes out only once a month. This is because the readership abroad is not as extensive as in Japan, and yet for more than a decade, Shonen Jump has been winning over foreign readers:
- The first issue of Shonen Jump was released in the US in 2003, and the magazine is still popular today.
- From 2001 to 2005 published in Germany, in addition to manga, the German version of the magazine published news from the world of anime and articles for those who tried to learn Japanese.
- From 2005 to 2007 the magazine could be found in Sweden.
- The Shonen Jump has been produced in Norway since 2005.
Unfortunately, the magazine is not published in Russia, but this does not mean at all that there is no Weekly Shonen Jump in Russian. Many domestic fans of anime, manga and everything related to Japan, with maniacal persistence, look for the original (or American) editions of the magazine, scan the pages, translate the text and retouch. In a word, there is Shonen Jump in Russia, only its fans publish it.
What's with the magazine?
In addition to the main Shonen Jump, there are related publications that appeared quite by accident, but readers really liked it. For example, Jump Next! is an independent monthly almanac that has been in existence since 2014. On its pages, beginner mangakas can publish their one-shots and even receive criticism from professionals in their field.
V Jump existedfrom 1992 to 1993, covering games and videos on its pages. Super Jump is more of a manga reader that was published from 1968 to 1988. Jump VS - This magazine specialized exclusively in combat manga. First published on March 22, 2013.
