The actress lost control: she wanted to overtake the car, but drove into the oncoming lane. A moment later, a garbage truck crashes into Catherine's car. On the way to Moscow, not far from the town of Lobnya, there was a terrible accident. The actress's car was so badly dented that the rescuers could not free Ekaterina from it for a long time.

In a very critical condition, Lapina was taken to the hospital, where she was urgently operated on. Unfortunately, the actress died without regaining consciousness. Ekaterina Lapina was thirty-seven years old. In a joint marriage with Alexander Basov, Catherine had no children. The closest relatives of the actress decided to cremate her. The ashes of Catherine were interred on February 18, 2012 at the Nikolo-Arkhangelsk cemetery in Moscow.
