Ukrainian poet Taras Grigoryevich Shevchenko is a great man and figure, a national hero of his country. The years of his life are 1814-1861. Poetry occupies a paramount role in Shevchenko's literary heritage. Everyone knows his collection "Kobzar", which is the basis of modern Ukrainian literature and especially the Ukrainian language.

Short biography
Taras was born in 1814, on March 9 (February 25), in the village of Morintsy, Kyiv province. He lost his mother very early when he was 9 years old. After her death, her father married a woman with three children. The stepmother did not love Taras and treated him cruelly. And at the age of 12, Shevchenko also lost his father.
Very early he began to write poetry and draw. And being an orphan, he looked for and found teachers for himself, sometimes very cruel. When he turned 16, he began to serve on the estate. The owner very often beat Taras for his passion for painting, but then he took pity on him and sent him to study with the master Shiryaev. Later, Shevchenko meets Soshenko, Bryullov, Zhukovsky and Venetsianov. It was these people who were able to buy it from the landlord.
Bryullov painted Zhukovsky and sold his portrait at auction. Shevchenko was bought out for the proceeds from the sale. It became a salvation for a creative person who was able to do his work freely.
The dawn of his work came in 1840-1847. But due to accusations of political treason, Shevchenko was sent into exile in 1846, where the worst thing for him was that it was impossible to write and draw. But the government found out that he painted landscapes and sent him to a new exile, where he remained until 1857.
He was released for he alth reasons. A year after gaining freedom, he lived with F. Tolstoy. Then he went to his homeland. And in 1861, March 10 (February 26), he died.
Shevchenko in Literature
At the dawn of his creative work, Taras Grigoryevich presented readers with such colossal works as Gaidamaks, Poplars, Khustochka, Katerina, Perebednya, Naymichka. All of them were written in Ukrainian, which caused criticism.
During the exile, Shevchenko wrote several works in Russian, among them: "The Artist", "The Princess", "The Twins". They contain a lot of autobiographical information.
Painting and graphics
