Main characters and the beginning of events
The main character of the story is Seryozha, an 8-year-old pioneer, the son of a sapper company commander. His mother died, and his father, having retired, moved with his son to Moscow. Two years later, he decided to marry again, and at first everything went well. Valentina, the beautiful and kind wife of her father, took care of the boy, they had a happy family.
Everything starts to change when Serezha's father gets a position as director of a textile store. Problems start at home. Once in a new circle of friends, Valentina is gradually changing. She develops envy, the woman is constantly annoyed and complains about the lack of money. An honest and direct man cannot resist her pressure, and it all ends with the fact that Sergei's father is accused of a crime. He is sentenced to five years in prison for embezzlement of state property. When his father was sent to prison, Sergei stayed with Valentina, who was supposed to take care of him. Seryozha is appointed senior drummer of the detachment at the age of twelve. He is very proud of it.
Three years pass, and Valentina, Seryozha's stepmother, unexpectedly marries and leaves with her new husband, in fact leaving the boy to his fate. His father will stay in prison for another two years, and Seryozha remains alone for this time. Everyone turns away from him, and no one cares about the boy. Feeling empty, he associates with bad people, "rolls down the slope." When leaving, his stepmother left him one hundred and fifty rubles. But due to the bad company of Yurka's friend, this money quickly ran out. The boy, trying to find at least some savings in the apartment, accidentally finds his father's Browning. There is no money, and Serezha decides to sell some things to the junk dealer for a penny. At the same time, he reads a book that describes the fate of the drummer. The summary of the story of the French soldier makes the boy compare himself with the hero of the story, lonely and abandoned by everyone, like himself. He identifies with the hero of the story, trying to cheer up and gain courage during his difficult time.
Imaginary "relative" and suspicionsEarrings
One day a stranger comes to Seryozha and introduces himself as the brother of Valentina, who ran away with her new husband.
The good-natured fat man does not live alone in the apartment. Together with him, the old man Yakov, his friend, appears. This is an evil, ugly man who hates Seryozha. After some time, Serezha, his "uncle", Valentina's brother, and Yakov go to Kyiv. On the way, the boy is given incomprehensible assignments that he really does not like. Serezha has doubts, he begins to suspect that "uncle" and his friend are hiding something. He smells a strange smell in the house, finds an incomprehensible paper. "Uncle" promises to get him a midshipman's school in Odessa, but Seryozha learns that it simply does not exist. His suspicions grow stronger day by day. One day, a "relative" instructs Serezha to meet and make friends with Slavka, a boy from an intelligent family. At first, he is bored with his new friend, but on the test he turns out to be a real friend.
Exposure of spies and return of Serezha's father
Accidentally overhearing the conversation, Seryozha finds out that the fat man was deceiving him from the very beginning. He is not an "uncle", but a spy. Having found a lonely boy in Moscow, these people specially brought him to Kyiv in order to ingratiate themselves with Slavka, to get information about his father, a military engineer, whom they wanted to kill. Serezha finds in the things of the imaginary "uncle" his father's Browning, which he stole, and takes him away. Remembering the French drummer, the boy is determined to stop the villains and at the moment when the spies are trying to escape, hebravely gets in their way and fires, then passes out.
Everything ended well: it turned out that the Chekists had been following this couple for a long time. When the shooting started, they intervened and arrested the "uncle", and old Yakov killed Seryozha with his shot. The father comes to the hospital to see the recovering boy. He was released early, and now they can start a new life together.
