In Spain, at the beginning of the 17th century, a book is published that immediately attracts everyone's attention. Its plot is witty - it is a funny parody of the chivalric novels popular at that time.
It was with the advent of Don Quixote, written by Cervantes, that chivalric romances faded into oblivion. But the parody of them remained to live. For many centuries, interest in the book has not faded, moreover, it is becoming more and more. A summary of Don Quixote will show that the names of its main characters have already become common nouns, and some expressions from the novel have turned into proverbs.
Cervantes, Don Quixote: a summary of Chapter I
In a small town in Spain lived a middle-aged hidalgo, whose name was Alonso Quijano. He liked to read chivalric novels and, inspired by them, imagined himself a knight. Hidalgo decided to travel the world, seek adventure and perform feats.
For himself, he chose the name Don Quixote, put on the ancient armor that he inherited from his ancestors, took a horse with the beautiful name Rosinante and set off on his first campaign. A local became a squire for himpeasant Sancho Panza. The newly-minted Don Quixote managed to convince the latter of the personal benefit of future campaigns.
Chapters II-XXII: summary. Don Quixote and his first adventures
Don Quixote chooses a certain beautiful Dulcinea as his lady of the heart, as she appeared to him in his dreams.
After driving one day, they drive up to the inn, where they stop, mistaking it for an old castle. This is where the "initiation" of Don Quixote into a knight happened. The owner of the inn did this: he hit Don Quixote on the back of the head and hit him on the back with a sword.
The next adventure was a meeting with a herd of sheep along the way. His brave knight mistook for an enemy army, which he immediately began to destroy. For this, Don Quixote was hit hard by the shepherd.
Then our knight frees the convicts who are heading to the place of detention. He asks them to say hello to their modest beloved Dulcinea of Toboso. The liberated did not like the insistence of their savior, and instead of fulfilling his order, they beat him badly.
Chapters XXIII-XLIX: summary. Don Quixote and the next exploits
Everyone who met Don Quixote took him for a madman. And his friends (the barber with the priest) tried by all means to force him to return home to cure him of insanity.
The brave knight himself believed that all the misfortunes sent to him, as well as the misunderstanding of people, are tests that only the brave ones face. Friends ask the faithful Sancho to say DonQuixote that his beloved Dulcinea demands that he return home. But it is not good for a brave knight to return without having accomplished all the feats, so Don Quixote refuses to turn back to home.
On the way, the barber and the priest meet the unfortunate lover Cordenho and his companion Dorothea. Cordenho had a fiancee, Lucinda, who was kidnapped by a certain Fernando. This same Fernando once seduced and abandoned Dorothea. And now the two deceived decided to restore justice. They vowed to return their loved ones, even if it means dueling.
Don Quixote's friends persuade Dorothea to impersonate the wandering princess of Micomicon. Allegedly, she came to him asking for help, as she had heard a lot about his courage and exploits.
On the way to the fictional Mycomicon, the whole company met Lucinda, who was about to take refuge in the monastery. She did not want to live in a world without Cordenho. Now the once-separated lovers are reunited.
Dorotea managed to convince Don Quixote that without him the young people would never have met again. And he finally returned home. There, for a month, his niece took care of him along with the housekeeper. And his mind began to clear up, speeches were clear and reasonable. But as soon as a fleeting touch on the topic of chivalry, his madness returned with renewed vigor.
