Despite the rapid development of cinema and television, the popularity of the theater is growing more and more. If in the 90s of the last century performances were held in half-empty halls, now the era of sold-out houses has begun. Nothing will ever replace the live performance of the actors and the emotions that they bring to the audience. There are theaters in every major city in Russia, many of them have experienced a rebirth. The Winter Theater (Sochi) is very popular with local and visiting theatergoers.
Historical information about the Winter Theater in Sochi
The construction of the Winter Theater in Sochi began in 1934. The project was led by a young architect from Moscow, Konstantin Chernopyatov. His project was personally chosen by Joseph Stalin. The famous Moscow architects V. Shchuko and V. Gelfreikh were consultants to K. Chernopyatov. The peculiarity of the project is that the facade of the building does not look at the central street of the city, but is turned towards the sea. Spectators can go outside during the intermission to get some air or admire the beautiful scenery.
The Winter Theater (Sochi) was built over 3 years andwas ready for commissioning in 1937. In the auditorium, a box was provided for I. Stalin. From it there was a passage to an underground bomb shelter. The pre-war years were very difficult for the Soviet people, people experienced denunciations and surveillance. Special boxes were built next to the stage for the representatives of state security guarding important persons of the state. From there it was not possible to see the performance, but the auditorium was clearly visible. I. V. Stalin never managed to attend a single performance at the Winter Theater.
First performances at the Winter Theater
In May 1938, the Zimny Theater received its first spectators. Sochi became the city in which the theater team named after. Stanislavsky from Moscow. The audience was shown the opera "The Tsar's Bride" by composer N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. The scenery was magnificent. A talented staging of a famous work and subsequent performances by other groups turned an ordinary Black Sea city into an elite all-Union he alth resort.
The theater did not have its own troupe, so the stage was provided for the performance of theater troupes throughout the country. Performances that were brought on tour by Moscow and Leningrad theaters, teams from Kyiv, Krasnodar, Tbilisi, Minsk and many other cities enjoyed great success. The Sochi Winter Theater (photo in the article) provided the stage for famous actors A. Raikin, I. Ilyinsky, S. Lemeshev, D. Oistrakh. It is impossible to list the entire list of celebrities. In 1968, the Sochi Philharmonic Society was created in the theater, bringing together teams from differentgenres.
Interior & Exterior
The Winter Theater (Sochi) was built in the classical style. After the commissioning of the facility, the building was put under state protection, and it received the status of a cultural monument of republican significance. The building is surrounded by 88 columns around the perimeter, the facade is decorated with a large portico, on the pediment of which there are 3 female figures made in the workshop of V. I. Mukhina. They represent Painting, Architecture and Sculpture. A staircase leads to the main entrance of the theater from the sea. From two sides it is limited by stone ledges having the shape of a parallelepiped.
The auditorium seats 970 people. Gold, blue and white colors were used in the design of the interior decoration. This made it possible to create a rich interior. A chic chandelier with 300 lamps, made of rock crystal, hangs in the hall. In 2005, the theater underwent a major overhaul and extensive reconstruction, during which the seats for the audience were replaced, the orchestra pit was expanded, the decoration of the stage was updated, the technological equipment was replaced, as well as the heating system of the building.
Theater repertoire
On the initiative of Yuri Bashmet, the best drama theaters of the country perform on the theatrical stage of the theater. The repertoire of the Winter Theater (Sochi) is constantly changing, as the theater still does not have its own troupe. Despite this, the auditorium is never empty, theater posters are constantly updated. Not only domestic, but also foreign performers come to Sochi on tour. Every summer a film festival is held here."Kinotavr", in winter the festival of laughter and humor "Kivin" and the International Festival of Arts, the festival of children's creativity "Kinotavrik", various festivals and competitions of local importance are held.
On the posters of the Winter Theater you can see the names of the most popular performances of Moscow theaters and groups of St. Petersburg. Nonresident citizens can get acquainted with it on the website of the theater. The Winter Theater of Sochi (the phone number is indicated on the theatre's website) publishes announcements about the upcoming tour on social networks on Facebook and VKontakte.
