Oscars: Institutional history

The Oscars are an award given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States. It is considered one of the most authoritative and ancient, because the ceremony is over 80 years old.

It all started in 1926, when the head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer seriously thought aboutunite American filmmakers into one kind of organization. Now it is difficult to say whether he really cared for the development of American cinema or simply tried to expand his sphere of influence, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was created, and Louis B. Mayer chaired the committee that selected members for the organization. Well, what academy would do without a nominal award?

This is how the "Merit Awards" were designed - figurines-knights, reigning in a thoughtful pose on the film. The Oscar, more precisely the figurine, is cast from an alloy of tin and copper, and then covered with gold.

Voting for the winners in the nominations was carried out in two stages:

1. At first, the members of the academy selected five nominees each in their field - producers - in the field of producing, actors - in acting, etc.
2. The main council of the Academy, formed from representatives of 5 professional departments (directors, actors, screenwriters, producers and technicians), chose the final winners in all categories by voting.

The procedure for determining the winners has not changed over time, only there are 24 nominations, and professional guilds that vote - 15.

How is the award ceremony

The Oscars in 1929, the first in history, were held quite modestly: at the Roosevelt Hotel (Los Angeles) in the form of a banquet for 270 people. But modern ceremonies are distinguished by unprecedented pomp and scope.

It all starts with the procession of invited guests along the red carpet to the building where the presentation will take place. Stars in dazzling evening gowns walk past crowds of cheering fans and camera flashes, and are accommodated in a huge hall that can seat several thousand spectators.

The hosts of the ceremony change from year to year - they are famous comedians, popular actors or TV presenters.

For voicing the names of applicants in each nomination, famous people are invited - the list is also large: producers, directors, actors and actresses, TV presenters, etc. Periodically, musical and choreographic numbers are performed on the stage. Well, and, of course, the winners take a response word in which they thank relatives, friends, etc.

During the 86 years of the award's existence, many films have become its laureates. Because the list is so long, we'll only look at films nominated for Oscars in the 21st century. and winners in the Best Film category.

The new century was marked by the victory in the nomination "Best Picture" for Sam Mendes' film "American Beauty": the story of how a 40-year-old man harbors a passion for his daughter's young girlfriend.

In 2001, Ridley Scott's historical drama "Gladiator" - a spectacular costumed film about the times of Ancient Rome - took the Grand Prix, and in 2002, the members of the Academy jury were most impressed by the thriller "A Beautiful Mind" by Ron Howard.

The musical "Chicago" won in 2003, and in 2004 "Oscar"assigned to a fantasy film - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (directed by Peter Jackson).

In 2005, Oscar went to Clint Eastwood's drama Million Dollar Baby, in 2006 to Paul Haggis' film Crash, in 2007 to Martin Scorsese's thriller The Departed.

2008 brought No Country for Old Men (dir. The Coen Brothers), 2009 - drama Slumdog Millionaire (dir. Danny Boyle), 2010 - thriller Overlord storm "(dir. Katherine Bigelow), 2011 - tragicomedy" The King's Speech! (dir. Tom Hooper).

In 2012 Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist was awarded, in 2013 Ben Affleck's Argo, and in 2014 Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave.

Criticism of the ceremony
