Sergey Maksimov was born into the family of a county postmaster in the Kostroma province. There he received his primary education, attending the township folk school. Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich organized a number of different ethnographic expeditions to different parts of Russia. Sergei Maksimov was chosen to travel to the North. The book "Stories from the history of the Old Believers" was compiled from the author's articles published in the "Son of the Fatherland", as well as in "Illustration".
