Roman Vladimirovich Davydov was an outstanding personality. The Soviet animation director was an exceptionally solid, original daredevil and innovator. With the author's naive-primitive formation of the concepts of his work, he was known as a selflessly hardworking and efficient person.

Biographical facts

Davydov Roman was born in the spring of 1913, during the heyday of Russian culture, named by the French poet P. Valery one of the wonders of the world. From early childhood, the future animator was attracted by eccentricity and style. However, he began his education by studying at the Moscow Industrial College. Very soon, the young man showed an outstanding talent as a painter. Therefore, in 1932, Davydov Roman, driven by youthful maximalism, takes part in the competition of cartoonists. To the surprise of most, the brave self-taught achieves victory and decides to improve his skills. To do this, he continues his studies at the courses of cartoonists organized by the Crocodile magazine.

Striving to become one of the best in the professionalfield, in 1937 Davydov takes courses in the speci alty "artist-animator", which are conducted by the studio "Soyuzmultfilm". After their successful completion, Davydov works as an animator, collaborating with leading domestic animation directors Mstislav Pashchenko, Vladimir Polkovnikov, Ivan Ivanov-Vano, Dmitry Babichenko and many others. This fact is evidenced by the photo of Roman Davydov with prominent figures of Soviet animation, which decorates the lobby of the studio.

As a director

Davydov Roman made his directorial debut in 1956. At first, he made a puppet film "Gingerbread Man", two years later - "Three Bears". But the most outstanding project of that time period is considered to be the animated adaptation of R. Kipling's The Jungle Book. Between 1967 and 1971, an animated series was created, consisting of interconnected five parts, called "Mowgli". The director himself considered the film the main work of his creative career. This work of the director was, undoubtedly, a milestone achievement for all Soviet animation. The animated picture has earned high praise from artists and the love of millions of viewers. In his subsequent creative activity, Roman Davydov made films in the genre of historical or fairy tale narratives. His animation works "The Tale of Evpaty Kolovrat", "Nepryadva's Swans", "Ratibor's Childhood" gained national fame.

Davydov Roman was extraordinarytalent, but his strength and weakness at the same time was the combination of the incompatible into a single shell, a single schematized and stylized system. He selflessly revered the form of graphics of his work. He harmoniously elevated the line modules and schematization of his characters to a through unity of thinnings and seals. From this, sometimes in his films and individual frames of paintings, the action acquired lifelessness and unrealness. At the same time, the master did not care at all about the rigidity and dryness of the created images. His scenes were distinguished from most of those made by other animators by stylistic "combing", rationality in the construction of mise-en-scenes and pictorial "stubbornness". The director boldly took on the adaptation of radically opposite stories. He liked to struggle over the solution of the problem of harmonious combination of material and style. Repeatedly Davydov tried his hand at volumetric animation.

Nothing goes unnoticed

Being an honored worker of arts of the RSFSR, Roman Davydov, whose biography is summarized in this publication, was happy to pass on his experience, author's work to the younger generation of animators, teaching at advanced training courses for animators. His classes were very popular, his students literally idolized their mentor. The son of the master, Alexander Davydov, followed in the footsteps of his father, choosing the profession of an animator. Alexander during his creative career took part in the production of about 100 animated films, he is known to the viewer as the author of the belovedcartoon "The New Adventures of Parrot Kesha".

Roman Davydov did not have time to rejoice at the triumph of his son. In the last years of his life, he suffered a severe form of stroke and for a long time was in a pre-infarction state. As a result, the body, weakened by the disease, finally failed. The great cartoonist passed away in September 1988, but his creative legacy is immortal.
