About the theater

Nizhny Novgorod Opera and Ballet Theatre. A. S. Pushkin, whose photo of the building is presented in this article, opened its doors to viewers in 1935. In the 60s, it became the center of the city's cultural life. During this period, the repertoire, which consisted of the classics, was replenished with works by Soviet composers.

Then the theater was called musical. Its creators were conductors L. Lyubimov and I. Zak, director A. Lossky and artist A. Mazanov. Thanks to these talented enthusiasts, a musical theater appeared in Nizhny Novgorod.

Outstanding artists of our country began their creative careers here. For example, directorBoris Pokrovsky.

Today the head of the Nizhny Novgorod Opera and Ballet Theater is Renat Zhiganshin, a talented musician and conductor. The position of chief director is held by Dmitry Sukhanov. These people formed a new style in the work of the theater. Thanks to them, academic traditions are preserved, but at the same time there are constant experiments, search and even inventing new forms of dialogue with viewers and listeners. For example, in 2010, the theater, together with circus performers, staged the operetta "Princess of the Circus". It was an innovative project. Its unusualness is that the performances were in the circus arena, with the participation of its artists.

Another innovation is the inclusion of concert programs with elements of theatricalization into the theatre's repertoire. Such events proved to be very popular and quickly gained popularity. The idea of holding concert programs on the stage of the theater belongs to Dmitry Sukhanov, the chief director.

Another very important, significant area of its work, the Nizhny Novgorod Opera has identified educational activities for itself. For these purposes, subscriptions to visits were created. Thanks to this project, high art is being popularized and the audience is expanding. The theater implements subscription programs jointly with various universities of the city. This project was born 15 years ago and immediately became a success.

This and previous seasons saw a number of premieres. The repertoire was replenished with six new productions of different genres. They were received differently by the public. Nevertheless, no one remained indifferent and the performances did not go unnoticed. Among these new productions, there are two that have world premieres. These are operas by contemporary composers that have never been staged before. These are “Anna-Marina” by L. Klinichev and “Cossacks” by Sh. Chalaev. These premieres were dedicated to the Year of Literature. These performances are another manifestation of innovation in the theatrical tradition.
