The last century has given the world a whole galaxy of amazingly talented filmmakers who managed not only to create brilliant film masterpieces, but also to determine the development of many existing genres of cinema. Frank Darabont undoubtedly belongs to such outstanding directors.

Hungarian immigrant

One of the most famous directors and screenwriters of our time was born at the end of January 1959 in a refugee camp in the French commune of Montbéliard. The nationality of Frank Darabont is Hungarian, since his parents were citizens of Hungary, but were forced to leave their homeland due to the tragic events and consequences of the failed 1956 revolution. The family of the future filmmaker did not stay in France, the grown-up Frank immigrated to the USA with his family.

His earlier childhood and youth were spent in Los Angeles. The early biography of Frank Darabont is directly related to the many moves that influenced the formation of his worldview and personal preferences. After studying in high school, the young man showed a genuine interest in the world of cinema, therefore, as an environmentfor professional self-realization, he chose the film industry. Frank's personal life did not work out, he devoted all his strength to the cinema.

The beginning of the creative path

Creative activity of the cinematographer began with the production of low-budget horror film "Hell Night", in which Frank Darabont acted as an assistant producer. It was on the set of the film that he met Chuck Russell. Their meeting was the beginning of many years of fruitful cooperation. Over the next six years, he honed his skills, working in Hollywood as a set designer, then as an assistant production designer. During this period, Frank Darabont's personal life is marked by his marriage to Karin Wagner, a Hollywood film editor.

Together with Russell Darabont, he wrote the script for the third part of the cult horror franchise A Nightmare on Elm Street. The series sub titled "Warriors of Sleep" turned out to be many times more original than the previous one, although the creators again used the method of comparing what is happening in a dream and the consequences in reality. According to critics, largely due to the popularity of the third part of the audience, Freddy Krueger took pride of place in the pantheon of legendary horror villains.

Remakes and sequels

Further on, Frank Darabont's filmography was replenished with a remake of the 1958 classic film "The Drop", which was shot by Chuck Russell in tandem with Darabont, who acted as a screenwriter. It should be noted that horror and nowlooks quite impressive. But the tape failed at the box office: earlier the metaphor of the "communist threat" worked successfully, but the new author's reading of the plot about the deadly infection, hinting at AIDS, was not to the public's liking.

As a screenwriter

After the resounding success of his directorial debut, Darabont has not ceased to be a sought-after screenwriter. With his direct participation, the films "Frankenstein Mary Shelley" - a historical drama with a loving recreation of the color of a bygone era, "Fan", "Eraser", "Vampires" and the military epic drama "Saving Private Ryan", which entered the top ten most inspiring films of the 20th century.

Frank also participated in the creation of the TV movie Black Cat Run, repeatedly wrote scripts for individual episodes of the popular series Tales fromCrypt” and “Young Indiana Jones.”

Second and not last

The second and not the last film adaptation of King in the director's vision of Darabont was the mystical drama "The Green Mile", lasting almost three hours and capable of hurting even the most inveterate cynic. The film did not receive cult status like The Shawshank Redemption, but was highly appreciated by critics and the audience. Indeed, a masterpiece in all respects, unfortunately, did not receive a single Oscar, all the figurines were taken by American Beauty, which in the IMDb rating is inferior to Mile by more than a dozen positions. The tape has entered all sorts of lists of the best criminally deprived of prizes sad pictures, giving rise to a lot of imitations and parodies.

After this work, the filmmaker participated in the production of many films, significant among which are the films "Majestic", "S alton Sea", "Minority Report", "Accomplice". And in "King Kong" Frank appeared in a cameo.

Attempt 3

To be fair, Frank Darabont's films based on the works of S. King are not all successful. There is one exception. In 2007, he took the director's chair in the film "Mist", which is based on the story "Fog". After two previous highly successful film adaptations, the new project left many at a loss. As it turned out, the director was not going to make a horror film in its classic interpretation. He only borrowed an apocalyptic situation from King to show how people behave when they find themselves in the trap of their own fear, despair and hopelessness. SoDarabont, stuck between horror, thriller and drama, could not please critics or most ordinary people. Therefore, he returned to writing scripts, working as part of the creative team for the films "Godzilla" and "Snow White and the Huntsman 2".

Zombies

A significant milestone in the career of Frank Darabont is deservedly considered the epic "The Walking Dead". Moreover, while Darrabotn actively participated in the creation of the project, it was the resurrected dead that attracted the attention of the audience, and not the crazed surviving heroes. In the first season of the series, the zombies were just great. They knew how to quietly sneak up on victims, break windows with stones, climb over fences.

George Romero fan Darabont created them with an eye on "Night", "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead". They were just walking. But he did not like Danny Boyle's frisky and running zombies at all. Therefore, due to creative differences, the filmmaker left the project during the production of the second season. As a result, the show's dramatic emphasis shifted to the conflicts of living characters, the number of which increased with each new episode. Zombies are almost forgotten.

Gangster City

After the unprecedented popularity of The Walking Dead, Frank decides to continue working on television. He is preparing to release a new author's project "Gangster City". The series is set in Los Angeles in the post-war era. In the center of the story is a deadly confrontation between the police and brutalized gangsters. Frank invites several actors to the TV movie, withwith whom he worked on The Dead. The first season only included six episodes. Such a master as Darabont managed to make a detailed, convex story out of the "City".
