Character appearance story

He first appeared in 1964 in Marvel comics. The Purple Man was then the antagonist of Daredevil. He was designed by Stan Lee and drawn by Joe Orlando. In the 2000s, the villain had new enemies, but we will talk about this a little later.

Marvel Comics Character Purple Man - Biography

The birthplace of the future supervillain was the third largest city in Croatia, Rijeka. The Purple Man's real name is Zebediah Killgrave. He worked as a doctor and was soon recruited by the Communist Party. After becoming an international spy, Killgrave was tasked with obtaining a sample of a new nerve gas. To do this, he needed to infiltrate an American military base. The spy did not manage to get in unnoticed. Seen by the guards, Killgrave tried to flee, but the enemy opened fire. One of the bulletspierced the gas container and it enveloped Zebediah, turning the doctor's skin purple but harmless. Killgrave began to justify himself to the soldiers, who, to his amazement, calmly let the spy go. Realizing that as a result of exposure to the gas in his body, he was able to influence people, Zebediah began a criminal career and became known as the Marvel comic book character Purple Man.

Appearance and character

The supervillain looks like an ordinary person, but with purple skin. Apparently, he does not hide his unusual appearance with a special suit, but disguises himself, resorting to suggestion. He has an unbalanced psyche and a pronounced propensity for violence, up to and including murder. Devoid of compassion and any moral principles.

Abilities and skills

As a result of Purple Man (a Marvel comics character) being exposed to nerve gas, his DNA structure was altered. He got the ability to produce special pheromones that allow him to control other people. But for this, Killgrave must be near the victim. The farther he is from her, the less impact pheromones have. He can control the minds of hundreds of people at once. Only those who have exceptional willpower or immunity against his pheromones can resist the Purple Man. Apparently, he can throw them into the atmosphere and be in the crowd without disguise.

Another abilityKillgrave - fast regeneration. It was destroyed several times, and it was completely restored.

Marvel Comics character Purple Man has a bright charisma. This enhances his ability to influence others and helps persuade him to act in his best interests.

It should be noted that unlike most other Marvel comics heroes and villains, the Purple Man has little to no fighting skills and is easily defeated when faced with hand-to-hand opponents. Therefore, he prefers to act by proxy, as in the case of Jessica Jones and Daredevil.

The supervillain uses his abilities to achieve various goals: creating his own financial empire, for the sake of pleasure and gaining world domination. None of his plans, however, came to fruition.

Purple Man's Enemies

Killgrave's first opponent was Daredevil. Having gained the ability to control people, the Purple Man comes to New York and begins to engage in criminal activities. He catches the eye of Daredevil and he, acting faster than Killgrave, defeats the villain. After escaping from prison, he heads to San Francisco, where he again gets caught by Daredevil. Their third encounter ended in a fight and Killgrave's fall into the sea.

Purple Man's sworn enemies included Iron Fist, Namor, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Kingpin and Treasure. He tried to create a team of his children, who also had some of his abilities, but was destroyed by them.

Jessica Jones and the Purple Man– history of confrontation

The villain's worst enemy was Daredevil, but he could resist the effects of pheromones. But among the superheroes there were also those who were seriously affected by the manipulations of the Purple Man.

Marvel comic book characters have appeared at different times. If Zebediah Killgrave became known to readers in 1964, then one of his main opponents, Treasure, appeared relatively recently - in 2001. This is the name of one of the superheroines Jessica Jones. She was a classmate of Spider-Man. Having got into a car accident with a truck carrying radioactive waste with her family, she survived, but fell into a coma. After regaining consciousness, she discovered such abilities as great strength, partial invulnerability and the ability to fly. It is unknown what her career as a superhero would have been like had the Treasure not encountered Killgrave. Jessica Jones and the Purple Man met at a restaurant where she tried to stop the villain (he started a fight between the patrons using his powers). As a result, the girl herself was under the influence of Killgrave.

By subduing her mind, he used Jessica in his criminal plans. She was under Purple Man's control for eight months until he decided to use the Treasure to destroy Daredevil. While following his orders, Jones was spotted by the Avengers and captured. The Hero Team, with the help of Jean Gray, freed Jessica from the Purple Man's influence. She gained mental protection from his further attacks. During the next meeting, the girl is brutallybeat the villain, but left his life.

The Purple Man in Cinema

In November 2015, the TV series "Jessica Jones" was released. It tells the story of a superheroine who, after being traumatized by Killgrave, decides to start a new life. She leaves her superhero career and opens a detective agency. But then her worst enemy reappears, unwilling to leave Jessica alone.

The role of the Purple Man in the series was brilliantly performed by British actor David Tennant. The creators of the picture did not literally follow the comics and saved him from having to apply makeup on his face and body, which would give his skin a shade of purple. Instead, Tennant wore a suit of the same color.

The series received good ratings from the audience and was renewed for a second season with the same actors in the lead roles.

"Jessica Jones" marks the Purple Man's first appearance on the big screen. Prior to that, he appeared in two animated films about the X-Men and the Avengers.

Conclusion

The Marvel Universe is full of unusual characters, many of which are of great interest for their amazing abilities and skills. Some of them, like the Purple Man, are emerging from the shadows and being reborn through comic book adaptations.
