Novel-fairy tale "Dwellers of the Hills"
"The Hill Dwellers" is Richard's first and most successful work. The novel is a heroic fantasy that tells the reader about the incredible adventures of a group of brave rabbits. Each hero has their own character and clear motivation.
History of Creation
The Hill Dwellers is based on a story that Richard told his daughters during a long road trip. The writer, in order to entertain the children, began to improvise and came up with a story on the go. As the main characters, he took a group of adorable rabbits. The plot was based on a story from his life, which took place in 1944 during the battle for Osterbeek (Holland). The children liked the story very much, for this reason Richard decided to transfer his creation to paper and publish a book dedicated to his daughters.
Richard Adams has encountered some problems when publishing his creation. In 1972, thirteen publishers refused to print the novel. Nevertheless, Richard did not give up his idea and found a publisher in the person of Rex Collings. And, as it turned out, not in vain. The book "Dwellers of the Hills" became a real bestseller and brought its creator a whole lot of money. Moreover, the novel received a lot of various awards. One of them is the Carnegie Medal, which is the most prestigious and oldest literary award in England.
