Die Antwoord became a You-tube sensation. The guys, until recently unknown to anyone, upload their video clip Enter the Ninja and wake up famous after 10 million views. Here it is - the modern miracle of Internet advertising. It would seem that everyone can do it! But this is only the front side of the story, the official version.

How did it all start?

The history of the team begins long before the release of the song and the formation of Die Antwoord. The main character is Ninja, whose real name is Waddy Jones. His appearance and demeanor are reminiscent of a white boy named Eminem, who shocked the entire rap community ten years ago. Waddy already had some pretty successful bands. Every time he came up with new names, chips, legends… In the mid-90s, his name was The MAN WHO NEVER CAME BACK, and his project was The Original Evergreen. The guys released several albums with the Sony label. But something was missing, and the project became obsolete after two years.

Who are all these people?

The next step to the global music scene was the transformation of Jones into Max Norman (Max Norman). His older recordings are now quite popular as a result of Die Antwoord's fame. The project had the honor of performing as the opening act for NellieFortado and electronic music stars The Faithless.

Between these projects, Waddy also tried himself under other guises: Yang Weapon, MC Tatolly Rad. Already during this period, he begins to perform with a petite brunette who raps great and dresses like a boy - Henri du Toit. But things did not go beyond these steps. Soon Anri will appear in the zaf-rap collective as a full-fledged and irreplaceable member under the name Yo-Landy.

And only after such experiments in 2008, the notorious bastard in tattoos Ninja and the spectacular blonde Yo-Landy appear, who have the answer to all questions about what a successful group should be. Its name is translated from one of the official languages of South Africa as Answear.

Zef Rap Philosophy

So, the main style of the group was chosen street rap, which sounds in the areas of Cape Town at every step. The motives were composed of the simplest, rather sticky, instantly memorable. As Ninja himself says, the locals need a song that will yell from the car window. Therefore, here we need not just rap, but rave rap! And here it is - the note that Waddy lacked so much in all previous projects. The drive from this combination spawned an entirely new direction, Zef-rap. As Yo-Landy says, Zef (meaning straight boys in Afrikaans) is about those who are poor, but cool and stylish.

It turns out that Die Antwoord have created a whole new philosophy. Zef is black and white African culture, paganism, poverty mindset, modern music and acid colors of rave. All concerts are spiced with pyrotechnic explosions, smoke screens, laser shows and performances. And how could a project be less impressive if it originated in a country where there are as many as eleven official languages!

The audience loses control, freaks out, goes crazy - it's all about her. This music is about the modern generation of the 10s of the XXI century! Should we be surprised at such an unexpected African "sensation"? Yes! After all, it was they who managed to find a rap answer and a rave key to the hearts of listeners. Thank you very much for that!
