The British band Coldplay is one of the most popular bands in the world. Her music penetrates the heart of every listener, making you think about the most important things. How was the group formed? What influenced their creativity? Was their path easy? You will learn about this from our article.
Start
Coldplay met in a college dorm where they were educated. Chris Martin and John Buckland immediately found a common language, because they had a common passion - music. The idea of creating their own group was constantly discussed by them. Later, the guys get acquainted with Guy Berryman, unite in a musical group and sometimes play in London clubs. The last member of the band is Will Champion, who can play the acoustic and bass guitars. Unfortunately, he did not know how to play percussion instruments, but he quickly learned. The name Coldplay was given to the guys by another band who thought it was too depressing.
Safety
Coldplay's first release was the mini-album Safety, which the musicians recorded with their own money. It included only 3 songs: BiggerStronger, No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground, Such A Rush. The album was recorded at London's Sync City Studios and was released in a limited edition of 500 copies. Most of the discs the guys distributed to their friends and acquaintances, and also sent to record companies in England in the hope of further cooperation. The remaining 50 copies have been sold.
Album cover was also chosen completely by accident - a friend took a picture of Chris Martin during one of the first concerts in a London club near the sign Safety door ("Emergency exit").
In 1998, Fierce Panda Records director Simon Williams spots the talented band during a live performance. He offers the guys to record a couple of songs, and soon the single Brothers and Sisters is released with a circulation of 2500 copies. The song is noticed by the director of Radio 1 Steve Lamack, and it gets into the rotation, and then to 92 in the British top chart. For a little-known musical group, this was a pass to life.
The Blue Room
A year after the release of the first album, Coldplay immediately became interested in two directors of recording studios - Parlaphone and BMG Publishing. The band is signed to two major record labels, plays live, gets good reviews for their song Brothers and Sisters.
After numerous successes, the band decides to record their first solo album, work on which begins in the summer of 1999. But then all sorts of problems and disagreements began - Will Champion, the drummer of the group, got hooked on hard drugs, as a result of which he was expelled from the group. Because of this, Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, began to drink, and they decided to return the unlucky drummer.
The musicians recorded 3 new songs - Don't Panic (early version), High Speed and See You Soon, and 2 previously recorded songs - Such A Rush and Bigger Stronger were included in the album. The latter regularly gets into rotation on the radio. At the same time, accusations are regularly pouring on Coldplay that they "leaked" their style from bands such as Radiohead, Verve, Travis.
New stage
Coldplay's next album was Parachutes, released in 2000. The guys worked on it for half a year, and it was a really difficult time. According to the memoirs of the musicians themselves, they perceived the recording of a solo album as the last chance in their lives and wanted to fit as many different styles and trends into it as possible. The guys spent 15 hours at the studio, practically did not get out of there. By their own admission, if an outsider was with them at the time in the studio, they would just go crazy!
And finally Parachutes comes out in the summer of 2000. It really has everything - from the sad Shiver to the cloyingly joyful Yellow. The latter becomes the symbol of the summer of 2000 and the most popular, and the entire album stays in the top 10 of the British charts for a whole year. Critics called Coldplay "another sad Radiohead-like band" and Yellow was too rosy-cheerful. The musicians, on the other hand, say that they did not want to lead their listener into a state of depression, rather the opposite - their work calls for believing in the best and expresses the most sincere emotions.
A Rush of Blood to the Head
In late 2001, Coldplay began writing songs for their A Rush of Blood to the Head album, which was scheduled for release in August 2002. Musicians of the band Coldplay promoted the album for a year and a half and gave charity concerts in support of it.
The first song in Politik was written by Chris Martin after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The lead singer of Coldplay claims that one night he could not sleep and he decided to write down this composition on paper. When recorded and mixed, the song came out quiet, but Chris later made it much louder than the original to convey the mood. Coldplay songs such as God Put a Smile upon Your Face, The Scientist, In My Place and Clocks have been nominated for many prizes and awards.
When the band traveled around the world to support their second album, the musicians visited many countries on five continents, became the main guests and highliners of such festivals as Glastonbury, V2003 and Rock Werchter. Rolling Stone magazine named Coldplay as the best band of 2003. This album was a real sensation and ranked 473 in the ranking of the 500 best albums of all time.
X & Y
In 2004, Coldplay were ripe for a new, third album.
The work went much better than the second one, but still somethingwent well on the record. It always seemed to the musicians that the music sounds fragmented, there is not enough unity. To achieve it, they began to spend more time together - go on picnics, play football, communicate. According to Chris Martin, only together can you achieve the desired sound.
In April 2005 the first long-awaited single of the third album called Speed of Sound is released. The album X & Y, which is actively announced in the media, will soon be released. Many people were waiting for this album - the band members regularly gave interviews, appeared on talk shows, and announced the release of the album in every possible way. Speed of Sound immediately after the release rose to 8th place in the British top charts. In this they were on par with the Beatles. Ahead of the critics, this time the musicians decided to name all those who influenced their work - Kate Bush, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Bob Marley.
Overcoming
In the fall of 2006, the band members began to create their fourth studio album. The most popular among fans were the musical works of the Coldplay group called Violet Hill and Viva la Vida. The latter made a lot of noise - the band members were repeatedly accused of plagiarism, but soon these accusations were found to be unfounded. Famous musician Joe Satriani has filed a lawsuit against Coldplay. He was convinced that the band had infringed the copyright of his song. Satriani claimed that Coldplay completely copied the guitar motive in the song Viva La Vida from his repertoire, and specifically from the song If I Couldfly. The prosecution alleged that the band's lead singer "copied and pasted significant passages" from his song, which was released in 2004 on the Is There Love In Space album. The musician was outraged by the "plagiarism" and demanded that the group transfer to him part of the fees that he received from the sale of the Viva La Vida single.
Unfortunately, during the tour in support of the fourth album, the members of the musical group Coldplay realized that there were insurmountable creative differences between them. Chris Martin announced the end of the group in 2009.
Mylo Xyloto
But, to the surprise and joy of the fans, in 2011 the guys released a new album, Mylo Xyloto, with many wonderful songs. But the guys did not stop and started working on a new album. It was obvious that the differences that the band members managed to overcome were only beneficial. Coldplay wanted to create an album with a more acoustic focus. They succeeded - at the end of 2015 a new album A Head Full of Dreams was released. The most popular song was the song Adventure Of A Lifetime, on which the famous video with monkeys was filmed. The song has gained worldwide popularity. A lot of covers, arrangements for various musical instruments appeared on the network. The global network had a positive effect on the popularity of the group.
Coldplay now
Soon the band pleased their fans with the release of a new video called Hymn for the Weekend. This song has an interesting story: Chris Martin once jokingly said thatthe group does not have a single dance song that could be played in a nightclub. He began to think about how the song would sound, what the words would be. And one day these thoughts resulted in a result - an absolute hit. In a short period of several months, the video of the British group Coldplay and Beyonce, whom the group invited to participate in the recording of the song, already had 150 million views on the YouTube video portal.
One of the latest news about the band's lead singer is the news of his purchase of a musical theater in Malibu for a total of $ 4.45 million. The building has a very rich history: it has come a long way from a small church to a large recording studio.
If we talk about the personal life of Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, it is known for certain that he has been legally married to the famous actress Gwyneth P altrow for 11 years. Due to the artist's incredibly busy schedule, the star couple broke up in 2014. Chris and Gwyneth have two beautiful children: daughter Apple Blythe Alison born in 2004 and son Moses Bruce Anthony, who was born in 2006. It is also known that Gwyneth P altrow is a vegetarian, like the whole Chris family. However, after the divorce, Martin nevertheless decided to return to his former life and habits and began to eat meat.
Last summer, Coldplay concerts were held around the world in support of the new album. To the great regret of Russian-speaking fans, the musicians have never been to Russia. Let's hope it happens for sure.
The team continues to receive all kinds of prizes and awards. For example, Coldplay has been six timesnominated for the British music award Billboard Music Awards 2018. Numerous fans of the group will find out the latest news about their favorite musical group on the official website of the group, as well as on the official social media accounts.
