Sculpture is one of those types of creativity that, unlike fine art, most people love. After all, looking at figures in volume is much more interesting and easier than thinking about something, looking at a planar image. Sculptures made of metal are especially popular in our time. Unlike ceramic and plaster figures, metal art has become very popular. Such figures are used both for the decoration of urban space (monuments, fountains, statues) and for interior decoration (decorative figurines, bas-reliefs, sculptures).
The history of the appearance of the sculpture
People started making metal sculptures in the 14th century BC. e. At this time, metal was no longer a luxury and was widely used for the manufacture of household items, weapons and jewelry. Artisans improved their skills and over time began to produce not only utensils that had a functional purpose, but also objects of art,which carried only a decorative meaning.
The art of forging is one of the first metalworking techniques. The first sculptures that had a decorative meaning were totems and other statues of a religious nature. Over time, metal figures acquire a secular orientation, the first figurines and monuments appear. When production began to fail to cope with the number of incoming orders, blacksmiths came up with a method of casting. In this way, a large number of products could be quickly produced.
Interior decor sculptures
People have always loved to decorate their interior, so for a long time metal figures occupy one of the places of honor in home decoration. Now it is customary to divide sculptures into two types: decorative and utilitarian.
Decorative sculptures most often stand in houses with a large area. But utilitarian figurines can be found even in small spaces.
There are several ways to get decorative metal sculptures:
- casting;
- forging;
- openwork metal technique.
Sculptors for exterior decoration
Sculptures for the exterior are divided into two types: small-sized and large-sized. Sculptures made of metal of small forms mainly decorate the courtyards of private houses. Often they form one image with fountains or with flowers. Large sculptures include monuments, memorial pillars.
Such decorative elements are designed not only to decorate the city, but also to preserve the memory of past generations. It is worth mentioning that bas-relief also belongs to sculpture. Such decorative overlays often adorn municipal institutions and the homes of we althy merchants of yesteryear. Nowadays, the bas-relief has lost its former relevance, but it remains part of the history of art of past centuries.
Modern trends in sculpture
In our time, metal sculptures are incredibly popular. Moreover, there is a demand for both interior and exterior art objects. The difference between modern sculpture and the works of past masters lies in the utility of contemporary art. Increasingly, artistic metal processing is present in art objects. Openwork sculpture is in demand both in Russia and abroad. Modern craftsmen often combine forged metalwork with vegetation. In the interior, these can be stands for flowers, often complemented by fountains. In the exterior, these are metal sculptures that act as a frame for the topiary.
The masters of our time are trying to surpass their predecessors and are looking for new techniques for creativity and new materials for their execution. Therefore, now in the parks you can see bizarre elephants, giraffes or horses soldered from wire. It's great that people are moving forward and are not afraid to experiment.
