The Glazunov Museum is a collection of paintings by a true patriot. It is located in a restored mansion in the very center of Moscow, on the street. Volkhonka, 13. In the museum you can learn not only about the life and work of an outstanding artist, but also visit thematic exhibitions and music meetings.
Historical background
The Naryshkin family owned an old three-story house that now houses the Glazunov Museum. When it was bought by the widow of General D. S. Dokhturov, for seven years he rented an apartment-studio of V. A. Tropinin. Here he painted a portrait of A. Pushkin when he returned from exile in 1826.
The Glazunov Museum was opened in 2004. It is based on a collection of paintings and drawings by the artist, which he brought as a gift to the people. This is over seven hundred works. In addition, the Glazunov Museum found a place to house interesting collections of the artist: collections of icons and furniture. It is amazing that people of such a broad soul live in our mercantile time.
Continuation of traditions
Glazunov Ilya Sergeevichcontinues the noble customs of patronage, which were laid down by the Tretyakov brothers, S. Mamontov. Portraits of artists and politicians, grandiose oil paintings of the 90s, which reflected the chaos and horror of that time, small graphic works, illustrations for Russian classics, works on the theme of ancient Russia - such a diverse range of works that highlighted the issues that worried the artist, has an art gallery of Ilya Glazunov. Here is a picture that first became known to the general public.
It is called "100 centuries" or "Eternal Russia", written in 1988. She shocked her contemporaries when she appeared in small copies. They looked at the saints, public figures, educators, - in a word, the entire religious procession that Russia has gone through in its thousand-year history. Not everyone could get acquainted with the original. Now it is possible to do this by visiting the Glazunov Museum.
Short biography of the artist
The painter and graphic artist Ilya Glazunov was born in Leningrad in 1930. There he found the war. The whole family of a twelve-year-old boy died of starvation. He himself was taken along Ladoga to a village in the Novgorod region. After the blockade was lifted, the teenager returned to his hometown and began to paint. B. Ioganson became his teacher at the Academy after art school.
At twenty-six, Ilya Glazunov married a young artist who left this field, devoting her life to her brilliant husband and their children. The portrait of the artist with his family is presented onphotos below.
In the same years, he developed an interest in the work of F. Dostoevsky and illustrations for the novels "Demons", "The Idiot" appeared.
The first solo exhibition of I. Glazunov aroused great interest and controversy.
Travel and work
In the next ten years, the artist has been working a lot on portraits, landscapes of the Russian North, illustrations of Russian classical literature, holding exhibitions and trips to the Netherlands, France, Laos. Creates "Vietnamese Cycle". He is accepted into the Union of Artists of the USSR. In the 1970s and 1990s, Glazunov Ilya Sergeevich worked a lot on illustrations, creating a cycle dedicated to the Battle of Kulikovo. He travels to Chile, Finland, Sweden, visits Optina Pustyn, makes scenery for the opera "Prince Igor" and "The Queen of Spades" in Berlin, visits Cuba, where he will paint a portrait of Fidel Castro. At the same time, he manages to teach. In 1999, he received the Golden Eye of Picasso, a UNESCO medal.
Since 2000, there have been permanent awards to the artist for his contribution to contemporary art.
And we will return to the question, which also interests us very much. This is the art gallery of Ilya Glazunov, the interior of which was designed by the artist himself. Now it is expanding, a new building is being completed in the courtyard.
What's on display
The Glazunov Museum is impossible to run around in one hour. Starting from the basement floor, where portraits of Italian cinematographers, works by the artist's wife, sketches and photographs of the office of the country's president are placed, one wants to linger everywhere.
Firstfloor
It exhibits the early works of Ilya Glazunov. One of the works, in which the style of the master is already recognizable, is called "Love".
This is possibly a portrait of the artist and his wife. Two are separated from the whole world by their feeling. They are hidden in the late evening by a veil of rain and wind, which they do not notice.
Large canvases
After the chamber works, there is a transition to the hall, where large-scale canvases are exhibited, which cannot leave indifferent, since they reflect all the drama that was transferred in the 90s of the revolution. They reflect pain and horror. This is the chronicle of time. The Market for Our Democracy was written in 1999.
The canvas, the largest in the entire collection, sums up the reign of B. Yeltsin with his conductor's baton, which hit the whole vast country so painfully. In this picture, the rather scandalous television program "About This" is also not forgotten. The artist depicted himself in the right corner with a poster.
On the same floor in the halls you can find illustrations for the works of A. Kuprin, A. Blok, F. Dostoevsky, Leskov. They are magnificent in their deep penetration into the work of our brilliant writers, whose equals are very difficult to find in the Western world.
Rus is located on the second floor. And it's wonderful that the painter is so deeply imbued with the history of Russia. Kulikovo Pole is the first sign of freedom that flashed over Russia and showed the people that the yoke is not eternal, that the Tatars can and should be defeated. Kulikovo field - a turning point inworldview of Russian people.
Third floor
Shows deep antiquity from Rurik, Sineus and Truvor.
Here there are mythical birds of the Slavs - Sirin and Alkonost, portraits of Ivan the Terrible, as well as images of ordinary Russian people. The icons, collected by a deeply religious artist, who even considered taking tonsure in his younger years, have been moved to a new building that has not yet been opened.
Characteristic of creativity
The artist Ilya Glazunov is multifaceted. There are several directions in his work:
- Monumental works.
- Images of Russian history.
- Urban cycle.
- Images of Russian literature.
- Portraits.
- Theatre.
- Activity as an architect.
- Literary creativity.
Every time you ask yourself: "How can one person create so much that touches on the most exciting questions?". He manages to combine the work of an artist with a huge public activity, responding to everything related to culture and politics. I. Glazunov was one of the first in the 70s who opposed the general plan for the reconstruction of Moscow. Activists have achieved the preservation of historical buildings in the capital. He continues this work in the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.
