David was born in 1965 in the English city of Birmingham to a family of a waitress and a truck driver who moved here from the Congo in the late 50s. He studied in his hometown - attended Washwood Heath Academy. He was a member of the London National Youth Theatre, and at the age of 18 he entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. David Harewood now lives in Streetham, south London, with his wife, Kirsty Handy, and their two children.
