Mikhail Vasilyevich Nesterov was born in 1862 during times of change. Serfdom was abolished, there were changes in the judicial system, in the army. The first revolutionary organizations appeared. There were repeated assassination attempts on Alexander II, and in the end he was killed. Mikhail Nesterov found the reign of two more emperors, survived several revolutions, the First World War, civil war, famine and devastation in Russia, the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, but, possessing the highest spirituality, he created pure, uncluttered canvases. The heroes of his paintings were looking for God and truth.

Study and serious work

Mikhail Nesterov studied painting both in Moscow and St. Petersburg. His favorite teacher was V. G. Perov. At this time, he painted both genre works and paintings on historical topics related to the pre-Petrine era. In the same years he marries. The wife dies in childbirth. But he captures her image in his works, including “The Bride of Christ.”

A young woman immediately conquers with fragility, subtle sadness, resignation to the inevitable. Silent girl makes you want to understand what she's thinking. This is how the collective image of the Nesterov girl appears. The landscape behind it, deeply lyrical, discreet, is close in spirit to I. I. Levitan.

The Hermit

Mikhail Nesterov wrote his first milestone work in the late 80s. A gray-haired hermit moves slowly along the river bank.

A monk lives not only according to the laws of nature. It is lovingly written out in every detail: stunted Christmas trees, last year's still dry grass and the remnants of unmelted snow on it, a quiet mirror river that does not move at all. Mikhail Nesterov portrayed an old man who lives according to the laws of the liturgical year: from one fast and feast to another, thus filling his life with merging with the Lord. It is difficult for him to walk, but he goes with prayer from one holy place to the next. That is how his soul and body live. From such a person I want to receive a blessing and perceive at least a drop of humility. Mikhail Nesterov filled the work with ringing silence and inescapable admiration for the discreet beauty of Russian nature.

Vision to the youth Bartholomew

This painting was the first of a cycle dedicated to Sergius of Radonezh.

The picture shows a gray serene warm autumn day. The sky is pale, without glimpses of the sun. A verdant valley with a hill to the left goes into the distance. A rivulet winds under it, cabbage gardens are nearby, and groves are golden on the right. And in the foreground is a thin, clear drawing of a fragile child. Whether hedreamed, or was it really a meeting in enchanted nature with a holy elder, who gives him both prosphora and parting words for a lifetime full of service to the Lord.

Portrait painting

The subtlest lyric poet Mikhail Nesterov is an artist who paints portraits of people of deep spirituality. A lot of them. One can only recall the portraits of Bulgakov and Florensky ("Philosophers" - see reproduction below), I. P. Pavlov.

Soul of the People

On the eve of the revolution, the artist will paint a canvas in which he will reflect the search for God.

Soul of the people
Soul of the people

Everyone in this picture goes their own way. Someone is in thought, someone is in a hurry, someone is joyful, but all are filled with a single thought: for a long journey, consider your path to Him.

Deeply a believer, Mikhail Nesterov painted pictures not with a brush, but with his soul. Therefore, they are alive for us and do not lose their meaning for a caring person.
