It seems that Terry Gilliam, whose films have been watched with pleasure for a generation, has always been a celebrity. In fact, this is very far from the truth, despite the fact that in recent decades he has indeed been widely known among a certain circle of people. His career as a director and screenwriter brought him real popularity, although at different times he was also an animator, composer and actor.
Early years
Most people believe that Terry Gilliam was born in the same place where he works - in the UK. However, this is not at all the case: he was born in Minneapolis, USA, on November 22, 1940. In the same place, in America, he received his education, graduating from college in Los Angeles, where he studied political science and was engaged in the release of an amateur humorous magazine, while sending some of his work to the editor of a youth publication. The latter, obviously, was useful to him in life a little more than the speci alty he received.
Career start
Shortly after graduation, Gilliam became an animator and met British journalist JohnKliz, who invited him to work in Europe. Very quickly, Terry became friends with a small group of actors who developed humorous telesketches, which became popular almost immediately. This is how the legendary band "Monty Python" was born. Its peculiarity was that each participant was involved in the development of scripts, mise-en-scenes and other elements of the show. It became so popular that, five years later, full-length films began to appear, while retaining a characteristic humor based mainly on parodying conventional norms.
At first, Terry Gilliam worked exclusively with the concept, music and animation inserts for Monty Python, but in 1971 he himself appeared on the screen, and in 1975 he also acted as a co-director. Perhaps this determined his future life, especially since by this time he had already received British citizenship and firmly settled in a new place.
Private life
Despite all the popularity that fell on him, Gilliam did not follow the path that many people follow in the same conditions. Tabloids do not write about his life, there are no mentions of his new passions in magazines (having married in 1973 to makeup artist Maggie Weston, who worked side by side with him, he became an exemplary family man). Having entered into marriage, they did not leave their careers: at different times, the spouses became nominees for various prestigious film awards, including the Golden Globe and Oscar.
Perhaps he dreamed of a son, but became a fatherthree wonderful daughters, one of whom went on to produce and work on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the film that Terry Gilliam gave to the world.
Filmography
He never ceases to amaze with his efficiency. In total, this man took part in more than 120 films, doing a variety of jobs. Listing them all is not an easy task, so perhaps it is worth mentioning only those in which he acted as a director.
- "Jarmaglot" ("Jabberwockies") - the first independent film, although very close in spirit to "Monty Python", was received rather coldly by the audience and critics (1977).
- "Bandits of time" - a break from the established style (1981) is planned.
- "Brazil" - Terry Gilliam, although he was known for his previous works, received real success after this film (1985).
- "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" - four Oscar nominations (1988).
- The Fisher King is another masterpiece in the psychological drama genre, nominated for the Golden Globe (1991).
- "12 Monkeys" is a feature film in the career of its creator (1995).
- "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" - this film also became a cult film, despite the failure at the box office (1998).
- "The Brothers Grimm" - the film was received rather cool, but the box office covered the budget (2005).
- "Land of the Tides" -due to some features, the tape was almost not shown on the wide screen, some critics were outraged by the content (2005).
- "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" is one of Gilliam's most famous and large-scale productions, the work in which was the last role of Heath Ledger. Two Oscar nominations (2009).
- "The Zero Theorem" was presented at the Venice Film Festival, rather ambiguously accepted by the audience and critics (2013).
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Terry Gilliam conceived the idea of making this film, already having more than solid experience both as a director and as a screenwriter. After carefully reworking the legend of Dr. Faust, he assembled a stellar and experienced cast and crew, intending to create a movie masterpiece.
It's hard to tell if Terry Gilliam has succeeded in this endeavor, as the film has yet to stand the test of time. The picture is phantasmagoric, the world created by the director is constantly changing, so that the meaning can slip away. In the midst of work on the film, one of the leading actors - Heath Ledger - was found dead, which at first called into question the future of the tape, because many scenes with him had already been filmed. Nevertheless, even from this predicament, Terry Gilliam found a brilliant way out: the role was completed by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell.
Yes, perhaps this is not the easiest film to understand, but it is beautiful, interesting and looks on onebreathing. In the end, it becomes clear that the Oscar nominations were not in vain.
Current projects and ideas
Despite the success, the hero of our story is not going to stop there. In an interview, Gilliam admits that he always wanted to make a film about Don Quixote, because he associates himself with this character, struggling with imaginary difficulties. And it looks like his dream will come true soon. In 2017, the release of the film "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" was announced, on which the director began work back in the 90s, but was forced to suspend due to some circumstances. According to the plot, a resident of the XXI century will end up in medieval Spain, where he will be mistaken for Sancho Panza. It may not be exactly what Gilliam dreams of, but who knows what his next film will be? In any case, you can expect that if Terry is the screenwriter, the viewers will get a good portion of excellent corporate humor.
