The film of the English director "The Exam" was shot in the genre of a chamber psychological thriller. The creator himself calls himself a supporter of minimalism, and in this case, the picture is a philosophy of how far people are able to go for their own goal. Events develop in a single-seat microcosm. The script is written universally and can be adapted to the fate of every person who is looking for a good job.
The Exam (Psychological Thriller): Plot
At the center of the plot are eight talented applicants for a vacant position in a large company. On the way to their goal, they have already had to overcome numerous checks and tests, and now the final exam is ahead. The actors convey well the emotions and feelings that each person would have in this situation.
All contestants are led into a room where there are several tables, on each of which there are sheets of paper with the number of the candidate and pencils. The heroes remain under the supervision of video cameras and a silent guard. A strict observer says the following: "The dream job will go to the one who answers the last question within 80 minutes." However, he leaves without voicing the main question.
The conditions for successfully passing the exam are as follows: whoever speaks to an observer or a guard, ruins his piece of paper or leaves the office, will be taken out of the office and disqualified. Any questions? The examiner leaves, 80 minutes are running out. Turning over their sheets of paper, the contestants discover that nothing is written on them. At this moment, everyone is in shock, because it is not known what question they should answer. An Asian girl starts writing on her sheet and immediately breaks the rule of not ruining it, hence she is disqualified.
One of the men draws everyone's attention to the fact that it is impossible to talk only with the observer and the guard, but they can easily communicate with each other. To keep their identities secret, the contestants give each other nicknames:
- White.
- Black.
- Swarthy.
- Blonde.
- Brunette.
- Brown hair.
- Deaf.
It also turns out that spoiling someone else's paper and walking around the office is allowed. In search of a question to be answered, the contestants do just about anything. They break lamps, looking for infrared rays, soak paper in water, set fire to it. No manipulation helps them find the cherished exam question.
The only one who has distanced himself from everyone and does not take part in all the manipulations is the Deaf One. The only thing this man says is: “You just need to see clearly.”
The brunette decides to trigger the fire alarm to wet the sheets and see the watermarks on them, but it turns outshe set fire to her paper, so she is disqualified. From the communication between the subjects, it becomes clear to the viewer that the activities of the organization, where everyone dreams of getting a job, is connected with the development of drugs for a dangerous deadly disease.
All participants in the exam receive clear characteristics from Brown-haired, whose role is played by Adar Beck. The meanest is White. He forces the Deaf to ruin his sheet, taking advantage of his suggestibility, after which Black decides to tie the aggressor so that he does not interfere with cohesive work in the team.
Swarty Man tortures Brownie by trying to cut her leg with a sharp piece of paper, believing her to be a decoy. After that, White threatens to kill everyone, taking the gun from the guard, and shoots Black.
Left alone in the room, Bely shouts to the observer and the guard that he has passed the exam, because there is no one else left, and the time is up. However, in fact, the time has not yet expired, just the timer has been launched in an accelerated mode, and the man is taken out of the office as not having fulfilled the conditions.
A blonde woman, played by Natalie Cox, walks into the room and finds a deaf man's glasses, uses them as a magnifying glass, and, having examined one of the sheets of paper, finds the inscription on it: "Question 1". The girl recalls that before leaving, the observer asked: “Do you have any questions?” When the Deaf man enters the office, who turns out to be a representative of the firm, the Blonde replies: "No, there are no questions," and gets a job in the firm.
Criticism
The picture was received by film critics ambiguously. BasicThe director emphasized the individuality of each character. All applicants are universal types that are found in the world, while they do not even have names. The actors involved in the film "The Exam" are of considerable interest. Some of them are familiar to the viewer: Gemma Chan, Colin Salmon, Jimi Mistry, others flickered less on the big screen: Luke Mably, Adar Beck, the third part is generally unknown to the public. Each character embodies one of the traditional types: social Darwinist, religious fanatic, philosopher, gambler and psychologist. Each of them has their own methods of struggle.
Hazeldine plays with the viewer and the characters, skillfully manipulating stereotypes, the viewer's perception and a riddle that only he knows the answer to.
