Film directed by Paul McMeagan. British director of Scottish origin. Known as one of the directors of the film "Sherlock", "Smash", "Victor Frankenstein". "Slevin's Lucky Number" filmed in 2005. In terms of tension, acting and a strong script, the film is one of the most interesting crime thrillers; The film has a fairly high IMDb rating of 7, 8 out of 10 and 8 out of 10 on Kinopoisk. It is worth learning more about the plot, reviews of "Slevin's Lucky Number" and viewer comments.
It all started with a horse
The film set was located in Montreal, then in New York. An interesting fact is that when Jason Smilovich wrote the script, the actor playing the main character was his neighbor. Thus, the visiting screenwriter repeatedly saw Hartnettwrapped in a towel. It was this kind of actor that prompted the screenwriter to think about how to make the character as defenseless as possible in scenes with bandits. And, judging by the reviews of the film "Slevin's Lucky Number" in 2006, he succeeded.
The film's dramatic opening immediately puts the viewer on edge. Reviews of the film "Slevin's Lucky Number" have been written a lot. It's worth watching the movie to form your own opinion. After the opening credits, a conversation is shown in an empty waiting room. A framed illustration of the story of Mr Gutkat (Bruce Willis), who very dynamically tells an unknown listener the sad story of a family killed by bandits as a result. Then follows the seemingly incomprehensible death of the listener at the hands of the hero Willis. By the tenth minute, you already become attached to the film tightly. The plot develops very quickly. Goodcat says, "What is Kansas City Shuffle? It's when everyone looks to the right and you go to the left." These lines will still be found in the film "Slevin's Lucky Number". New York, morning, apartment. Slevin (Joshua Hartnett), wrapped in a towel, stares at his broken nose in the mirror. After losing his job, his home, and his girlfriend, he certainly didn't expect to be in the middle of such events while staying in his friend's apartment.
Story development
At first, the neighbor caught him like this. After taking Slevin for the owner of the apartment, members of two warring organized crime groups beat him and set various tasks for him, demanding a large amount of money. Moreover, to meet with one of the leaders, the Rabbi (Morgan Freeman), Slevin is again taken in a long-suffering towel. Finding out that he cannot prove that he is not Nick, Slevin is forced to accept an order to kill the son of the leader of the warring faction, the former friend of the Rabbi - Boss (Ben Kingsley). The future victim is Yitzhak, nicknamed Dove. Slevin has only three days to complete the order. By the way, a little later it turns out that Slevin is just a pawn in the game. He himself is assigned the role of the victim. As conceived by Goodcat, Slevin should illustrate a double suicide by his death. Naturally, under such conditions, the main character is simply obliged to find his friend, who could make his life much easier. In this intention, he is supported by Nick's charming neighbor - Lindsey (Lucy Liu).
Lindsay is sure that Nick just framed Slevin and specifically invited him to visit in order to impersonate the Boss and the Rabbi. In addition to the bandits, the police also pay close attention to Slevin. But, having really not received any results from communication, Slevin is released with a gloomy forecast, they express aloud the confidence that he is doomed.
Ties
And then - the murder of Yitzhak. It didn't go according to the client's plan. That is, along with Yitzhak, it was not Slevin who was killed, but the body of Nick was attached nearby, who turns out to be the guy in the waiting room who listened to the story about the murder of the family after an accidental win at the hippodrome.
The plot is veryinteresting, but then it becomes even more dynamic and twisted. The fact is that Slevin is not a random pawn in the game, he is such a puppeteer. It is the sad story of his family that Gutkat tells at the beginning at the airport. The killer took pity on the boy. The boy grew up and decided to take revenge on the killers of his father and mother. This whole complex combination was conceived precisely as revenge. He was considered a loser who was easy to manipulate, while Slevin calculated all their steps. He did not become a casual victim, he did not become a victim at all. And he told the Rabbi and the Boss about this. Not over a cup of coffee, but after seating them, tying them to chairs, Slevin tells them what happened in 1979 at the Aqueduct racetrack, about the seventh horse in the ninth race. Slevin survived, since no killer would undertake to shoot the child. The only one who decided to fulfill the order was Gutkat, but at the last minute he took pity on the boy, taking him with him. And the Rabbi and the Boss were sure that no one was left. Recalling the murder of his father and mother, Slevin repeats the scenario of his father's death. He puts bags on the heads of bandits and secures them with tape around the necks of the killers.
Next, detectives come into action again. During a telephone conversation, one of them tells the same story of 1979, recalling one oddity - the very horse that brought misfortune to the protagonist's family was named "Slevin's Lucky Number". This was his last memory. Slevin, hiding in the back seat of his car, kills him. After all, this particular detective in 1979 worked for the Boss and the Rabbi, this detectivedirectly killed his mother.
Lindsey, Nick's charming neighbor, almost died in the whole story, but was warned by Slevin and took precautions. Thus, she remained alive, although, working in the morgue, she had to die at the hands of Gutkat.
Decoupling
Based on the reviews of "Slevin's Lucky Number", the audience was surprised by the denouement. And here's the seemingly happy ending. Lindsey and Slevin in the waiting room. Gutkat gives his father's watch to Slevin. An old Kansas City Shuffle song plays at the end. It echoes Slevin's childhood memories, and Gutkat is driving the car. According to the writer's intention, these words of the song were quoted by Gutkat. “What is Kansas City Shuffle? It's when everyone looks to the right and you go to the left.”
Reviews
The film "Slevin's Lucky Number" has only positive reviews. The film is powerful, dynamic, not letting go of the viewer's attention, there are a lot of mysteries and answers throughout the story. I would like to note the fact that yes, of course, a large number of people die in the process of revenge, but as a result it turns out that there are no accidental victims. Only those who should die as a result of revenge die.
