Metal or metal is one of the varieties of rock that emerged in the 70s of the XX century in Britain and the USA.
Its characteristic features: aggressive mood, long guitar solos, energetic and frantic compositions in terms of tempo and distortion effect - this is a maneuver that distorts the sound of the instrument.
Metal has seeped into almost every corner of the world, except in some countries where censorship prevents the genre from being seen and heard.
Music has many subtypes ranging from soft (heavy and power metal) to the most violent (death, extreme, thrash and black metal).
Japanese rock
Asian music is very characteristic and it is quite easy to distinguish it from European music.
J-rock (Japanese rock) is common among fans of Japanese culture, famous for its literary direction (manga) and art (anime). In animated works, j-rock tracks sound on the main screensavers and in the plots themselves.
Japanese metal
Asian metal is a subspecies of the Japanese j-rock direction and has a short name j-metal.
The Flower Travellin' Band are the pioneers of Japanese heavy metal bands. Initiallythe band was formed in 1967 in the style of psychedelic rock with a different name - The Flowers.
After changing their name in 1971, they release their first album, Satori.
Debut Japanese heavy metal bands start appearing at the turn of the 70s-80s:
- Bow Wow - 1975.
- 44 Magnum - 1977.
- Earthshaker - 1978.
In 1977, Bow Wow performed on Japanese tours as the opening act for Aerosmith and Kiss. Subsequently, the team changes its name to Vow Wow. Their 1989 album Helter Skelter climbs to number 75 in the UK chart.
In 1980, Earth Ark's last album was released, featuring their favorite genres: hard rock and heavy metal.
80s
During the 1980s (during the massive rise of European rock), many Japanese heavy metal bands emerged.
Team Loudness was formed in 1981 by former members Akira Takasaki and Munetaka Khichuri. In 1983, they toured the US and Europe, and then began to focus more on the international level. Signed to US-based Atco Records in 1985, they were the first Asian band to do so with a major US label.
Their albums Thunder in the East - 1985, Lightning Strikes - 1986, Hurricane Eyes - 1987 managed to reach positions 74, 64 and 190 on the Billboard charts.
GroupsSeikima-II and X-Japan were a new phenomenon in Japanese culture in 1982.
The first team was a follower of the European team Kiss and quite surprised with their images on stage. In 1985, Seikima-II's debut album, Akuma ga Kitarite Heavy Metal, was released, which was able to exceed 100,000 sales, which was the first time for Japanese metal.
In 1989, X Japan Blue Blood's second album was released, the success of which was ahead of the first. With a total sales of about 712,000 copies, it reaches 6 on the chart.
Jealousy's third effort surpasses the previous two and sells a million discs.
It is believed that with the advent of the second group, a sharp rise in the j-rock style began. The team, in addition to the standard rock set, also uses classical instruments such as violin and piano. The guys became debutants of the 1st line in the Oricon charts. Also, the popular magazine Rolling Stone Japan placed one of their works at the 15th place in the list of the best Japanese rock albums.
Both bands stood at the origins of the visual key genre (formed as a result of mixing glam, punk rock and metal).
1990-2000s
Japanese metal found its way into the bands Boris and Church of Misery, both gaining international fame.
In addition to heavy metal, teams are formed with the style of nu-metal:
- Rize - 1997;
- Maximum the Hormone - 1998;
- Head Phones President - 1999.
Besides newcollectives, reunite and "pioneers":
- Bow Wow - 1998.
- Loudness - 2001.
- 44Magnum – 2002.
- X Japan - 2007.
Versailles are a symphonic Japanese metal band that plays power and neoclassical metal styles. The team gained considerable popularity after their debut EP Lyrical Sympathy was released not only on the domestic stage, but also abroad.
Japanese metal and girls
2010 was marked by the emergence of the female half of humanity in the field of j-metal. Although not the original, Alldious is credited with starting the movement that spearheaded their debut album Deep Exceed in 2010.
Another famous female "team" was Cyntia, who first signed a major label with Victor Entertainment in 2013.
But the real breakthrough came with kawaii metal by Babymetal. The vocal and dance group includes 3 girls. The first of the hits immediately hits the Oricon charts.
List of popular active bands
Japanese metal has risen to the same level as European metal, and there are decent examples among Asian bands:
Acid Black Cherry is a project consisting of one soloist - Yasu, who invites other musicians to collaborate
- Crossfaith - an industrial and metalcore band formed in 2006;
- D -interesting for her compositions in the genres of symphonic, death and gothic metal.
- Dir En Gray - serious guys working in avant-garde and progressive metal styles, one of the most popular bands outside the country.
- Exist Trace is a Japanese female metal band active in gothic, doom and death metal since 2003.

- Sex Machineguns - translated as "sexy machine guns" - are the main artists in the Japanese metal scene. Their subgenres are speed, power and thrash metal.
Japan is famous for even more teams that would take a long time to list.
From all of the above, only one conclusion can be drawn: in terms of hardness, Japanese metal can compete with European.
