Viewer reviews
Viewer reviews

Most of the reviews about the film "Another Life" expresses only approval and praise for the director, because the idea of the film is really not new (the film "Inception" with Leonardo DiCaprio), but the way it was presented and embodied deserves respect. In "Another Life" everything is in place, it does not have the escalation of the situation out of place, unnecessary drama, which is so often found in many works of cinema. Undoubtedly, many words of admiration for actress Jessica De Gou.

Critic Comments

Another Life reviewed by Harry Windsor of The Hollywood Reporter, calling it "a stylish sci-fi piece crafted with a sense of scale that belies its indie budget."

In the same 2017 review of Another Life, The Guardian's Luke Buckmaster rated it 3/5 stars and wrote: performed by Jessica De Gou.”

Emotional depth of the film

The film also has a deep emotional underpinning. What is it like to survive a month, several months, a year or several years in one minute. Thoughts, regrets, resentment, self-torture, lasting endlessly. And suddenly it turns out that in fact only a minute has passed. And everything experienced over a long time in an artificially created world must be able to realize and get used to it.

For a minute
For a minute

The idea did not carry anything harmful, just virtual impressions that a person has never experienced in real life, a toy with pleasant memories. But it turned into a desire to rule people and a desire for personal gain. The ability to live a lifetime under someone else's control in one minute, without even having an idea of what is really happening to you.

How does it feel when your time is worth nothing? How does it feel when you have no idea where you really are or what year it is? That's what they gavefeel the director and the entire film crew. Not surprisingly, almost every review of Another Life talks about how deeply the director was able to penetrate the mind of the viewer and how much the film influenced.

Storyline

Ren Amari is a lead researcher at a technology company she co-founded with Sam. The company conducts research in the field of nanotechnology and biology. Ren's research leads her to discover a new form of virtual reality called "OtherLife". This technology allows you to implant memories in the human brain that seem absolutely realistic. Before the start of the official presentation of the product and its launch on the market, she tests it on herself with the help of engineer Finbar. Also, secretly from the rest, she decides to test her brother Jared, who is in a coma. Ren believes that the new memories will allow him to recover. While their father wants to end Jared's life support. By the way, it is on his scientific work that the “Another Life” technology is based. Amid these problems, her romance with Danny begins to slowly unravel.

Ren sets herself up

Sam introduces the technology of Another Life to investors, assuring that its use can be started in the coming days. Ren is horrified when Sam suggests using her instead of jail time, implanting new memories into criminals. The prisoners would remember that they had been in prison for years, but in reality only a minute would have passed. itwould solve the problem of overcrowding in prisons. While alone with Danny, Ren tells him about his research and the new simulation. A flustered Danny tries it unsupervised, not knowing it's an experiment Ren designed for Jared. As a result, Danny dies in convulsions, at least the main character thinks so.

Reviews of "Another Life" openly talk about the similarity of the plot with the content of Kelly Eskridge's book "Solitaire", published in 2002. In the same year, the writer was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel. This is true, however, director Ben-Lucas and screenwriter Gregory Wyden did not make a film adaptation of the book, but received the rights to freely interpret the plot.

Imprisonment in my own head

The government is ready to drop the trial for unlicensed human testing and Danny's death if Wren agrees to one year of solitary confinement in a projection created by Another Life. With no alternative, Ren agrees. She then gets stuck in a simulation that includes just one room and life's essentials, including bottled water and canned tuna.

After a whole year, Ren is incapacitated when the imprisonment counter resets to 0, but she does not receive a release. She is trapped in her own head, designed by her own technology. However, in her anger, she is able to dislodge part of the wall of the virtual prison cell and escape. She soon realizes that she is trapped inreal camera. She runs away, finds an employee who sympathizes with her and reveals the truth that her boyfriend Danny survived.

Illusion created in the movie

Ren reunites with Danny and discovers that the Another Life project has become a huge success and is widely used in many areas. It is used, among other things, for imprisonment, lasting, according to the description in the film "Another Life", for many centuries.

After some time, Ren develops a new, more advanced prototype of "Another Life". After she tests it on Jared, he wakes up, he reacts. However, he immediately makes it clear that he wants his own death. Ren heeds his request and turns off the life support machine. After that, she suddenly wakes up. Her "escape" was part of a trial in her year-long sentence. All her experiences after imprisonment become part of the interactive experience of "Another Life". Ren remains silent, knowing that Sam is using this technology against her will.

Ending

Wren with Sam and Byron reviewing experience data, Sam excitedly points to the part of the brain scan that correlates with her interactive experience.

When Ren refuses to cooperate, Sam suddenly has her imprisoned for a second year, hoping that she will cause disruptions again and allow them to learn how to develop interactive experiences on their own. Byron reluctantly agrees to this when Sam says it's the only way to get Ren to help.

Ren slips away againthe impact of virtual reality, this time faster. It stays quiet, allowing the simulation to run faster and repeat the same cycle endlessly. It was this moment in the plot that caused the most controversy in reviews of The Other Life. She regains consciousness and traps Sam in her own year-long incarceration program. The program throws an error, thereby putting Sam's life at risk. But Ren refuses to let Sam escape until he's been in jail for the full 365 days and then waits for the whole time the clock is ticking, which is a few more days. So that he could understand, feel the agony and feelings that she herself felt at the moment when the countdown reset to zero.

Once he recovers, Ren leaves the company to meet his father. After understanding Jared's situation, she accepts her father's decision to end her brother's life support.
