Screen adaptation of "Crime and Punishment": list of films

Attempts to create quality film adaptations of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's cult classic Crime and Punishment have been in the industry for years. Now there are about ten paintings, and you can briefly learn about all of them in the article.

The first films. "Crime and Punishment"

Screenings are mostly from the last century. The first attempt was made back in 1923 in Germany. At that time, technologies did not allow conveying the fullness of sensations and enjoying acting. The picture has long been forgotten, it was called "Raskolnikov", and Robert Wiene was involved in its creation.

In 1935, American masters under the direction of Joseph von Sternberg turned to Dostoevsky's drama. The picture was a free adaptation, but was far from being a hit of the first half of the 19th century. After that, they returned to attempts to create a worthy film adaptation in 1959. The film "Crime and Punishment American Style" put more emphasis on the emotions of the main characters. He found his fans, but did not deserve the status of a cultmovie. Soviet work

Until 1969, there were three adaptations of Crime and Punishment, but none of them was created in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's native land. The Soviet masters undertook to correct the situation, and after a long work they presented the work of the same name.

The plot completely repeated the main points of the novel. The main character Rodion Raskolnikov wants to study, he is a poor student from an ordinary family who cannot even provide himself with housing. He comes to mind the murder of an old woman who gives everyone loans at huge interest. So he decided to test his theory of the division of people in society. Allegedly, some always have to live in fear, while others have the right to immoral offenses. In this field, the plot twists with the murder of two characters.

The cast, including Georgy Taratorkin, Victoria Fedorova, Innokenty Smoktunovsky, perfectly conveyed the general mood of the original work. The audience adequately appreciated the picture, even though it was recommended to read the book before viewing. Among all the adaptations of Crime and Punishment, this film is considered the best.

Renew attempts

In 1998, American director Joseph Sargent decided to take on Dostoyevsky's novel about a poor student. The main argument for viewing is the cast in the form of Patrick Dempsey, Ben Kingsley and Lily Horvath. The picture was shot more with an emphasis on the investigation and mental anguish of Raskolnikov. Although the film is over 20 years old, it surprises with its quality production and deserves the title of the best adaptation of Crime and Punishment.

The plot of the Russian classics attracted the masters of the industry, and in 2002, along with the film, a series with the same name was released, but already in the UK. Director Julian Jarrold was responsible for his appearance. The tie is standard, as in previous works.
