History of the theater

Comedy Theater (Nizhny Novgorod) opened its doors in 1942. Then he had a different name - "Sniper". Initially, it was a theater of variety miniatures. It was created to support the people's fortitude in the difficult war years. Laughter here was a weapon to fight the enemy.

The first years the troupe worked in the building of the Philharmonic on Sverdlov Street. The composer B. Mokrousov, who had already become famous by that time, was in charge of the musical part.

In 1946, the Sniper was reorganized. Since then, the theater has become known as the Nizhny Novgorod Comedy Theatre. For the next few decades, the troupe worked in the building of the former Peasants' Bank on Mayakovsky Street. It did not quite fit the theater: the stage was small, the hall was uncomfortable, but the artists worked in spite of everything.

In the 60s, Elina Bystritskaya, Ekaterina Raikina, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya and others came to Nizhny Novgorod with entreprisesamazing actresses.

In the 70s the theater repertoire was built on the classics. The leaders of that time were adherents of the traditions of the Russian psychological theater school.

In 1983, S. E. Lerman became the chief director of the theater. This is a legendary person with whom an entire era is associated. Thanks to his arrival in the theater, the troupe began a new life. Semyon Emmanuilovich brought his students with him. It was they who became the backbone of the updated troupe. Thus, experience and youthful enthusiasm are united in the team. The performances staged by S. E. Lerman were in tune with that time. Many works by Soviet writers first saw the stage in the Comedy Theater staged by Semyon Emmanuilovich.

During the years of perestroika, the troupe wandered around other people's stages, toured the villages and nearby towns. The building on Mayakovsky Street, in which the artists worked for several decades before, fell into disrepair. Only thanks to S. Lerman in those difficult years the theater survived and did not cease to exist, like many others.

In 1999, the theater was given a building on Gruzinskaya Street. But before the troupe could start using it, it had to be extensively reconstructed and restored. This took about a year. The best architects of the city were involved in the creation of the project of the building. The result is a real temple of art. A comfortable hall, a large stage, spectator seats from France, chic interiors. Then the name appeared, which remains to this day - "Comedy" theater (Nizhny Novgorod). In 2005, the second stage of the theater was opened - the Small Stage. At first there were performances for children. In 2009, adult performances began to be shown here as well.

In 2011, a new genre for it, the musical, entered the theater's repertoire.

The troupe actively cooperates with famous directors, artists and composers from St. Petersburg and Moscow, successfully tours and wins awards in competitions and festivals.

Today its artistic director is D. I. Konovalov.
