The Dutch capital has gained popularity among tourists around the world. Among all the sights, the Vincent van Gogh Museum stands out. Although the famous artist's hometown is Grote-Zundert, the museum was built in the tourist heart of the country.
Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam
The Van Gogh Museum is a huge collection of the master's artwork, which consists of more than 200 paintings (about 800 in total), 500 drawings (about a thousand were created in total) and 700 author's letters. Realizing the fact that the artist has devoted only 10 years to writing his paintings, the number of his achievements is truly amazing.
The museum has Van Gogh's creative laboratory, the atmosphere of which is most reminiscent of the one in which the painter painted his paintings. There is also a library, which has the personal letters of the artist. It turns out that the Vincent Van Gogh Museum has not only artistic value, but also information.
Artwork Collection
In the museum5 thematic stages are presented, each of which reflects the main periods of development of the artist's work:
Netherlands
The initial stage of the master's work is characterized by the predominance of dark shades. The main object of the image in the paintings is the peasants, busy with work. A famous illustration of this theme is the canvas “Potato Eaters”. In dim lighting, the paintings produce an even darker impression on the viewer. In the gallery, it is used to create the right atmosphere.
Paris
This stage is characterized by the use of lighter and brighter colors. The paintings acquire blue, red and yellow shades of colors. Also at this stage, one can notice a characteristic feature of the master - the use of short strokes in an expressive manner. The paintings of the Parisian period are mostly self-portraits. The work "Self-Portrait in a Felt Hat" is a prime example of this stage.
Arles
This stage reveals Van Gogh as a master with a unique manner. Landscapes are the main theme of this collection. The artist's paintings are bright and juicy; flowers, trees and meadows are depicted on the canvases in various variations. The famous work "Sunflowers" is a vivid example of this period.
San Remy
This period did not go smoothly for the artist. Van Gogh at that time was in a psychiatric hospital, where he created his paintings. This influenced the plot of the paintings. They are already written in the abovea creative style of vigorous strokes, which is combined with the use of softer shades. The Van Gogh Museum presents the most famous painting from the San Remy period, Starry Night.
Auvers-sur-Oise
Paintings from this period are placed in a hall with dazzlingly bright lighting, which creates the opposite of the lighting of the hall in the Netherlands stage of creativity. The master uses bright, rich colors and uses his unique style of short expressive strokes. One of the most famous works of this stage is “Wheat Field with Crows”. In addition to the collection of works by Van Gogh, the museum has paintings by other painters. There is also a separate exhibition of the formation and development of the museum.
Other artists
The Van Gogh Museum also presents a wide range of works by other artists. They were close friends or contemporaries of Van Gogh. Among them are P. Gauguin, C. Monet, P. Picasso and others. The artists met in Paris. In this city, Van Gogh could watch the creation of the creations of French Impressionist artists, which soon became world famous.
Vincent van Gogh studied in Paris for several months to learn from his contemporaries. This period greatly influenced further creativity: lighter shades began to predominate in the paintings, and the very technique of depicting light was improved.
Van Gogh Museum in Moscow
To the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary ofVan Gogh's death, most European countries hold thematic expositions and events dedicated to the work of the great artist.
