Many of us love horror movies. Some of them prefer to watch to tickle their nerves. Few people know that horror as a genre arose long before the advent of cinema and television. At the end of the eighteenth century, at the height of the revolution, performances were staged in Paris with "ghosts", ghosts and monstrous faces. The then superstitious French were horrified, but still went to look at this "devilry". And the solution was simpler than many thought: in an abandoned chapel, several artists served special mobile screens depicting all sorts of evil spirits. This performance was called Phantasmagoria.

At the end of the eighteenth century, such a direction as the Gothic novel arose in literature. It was in this style that the works were written

like "Frankenstein", "Dracula" and other horror films. The worst dreams seemed to come true shortly after two Frenchmen - the Lumiere brothers - invented a special apparatus that became the ancestor of modern television. In 1896, the film adaptation of the novel The Devil's Castle shocked thousands of people. The characters were demons and skeletons. Increasingly, they began to go to the cinema to watch horror films. The scariest rolesAt the beginning of the twentieth century, the famous actor Lon Chaney got it. He's become something of a veteran of the genre. Due to the fact that he often had to shoot in a mask, then in makeup, he was nicknamed "the man with a thousand faces."

In the thirties, this genre of cinema received even more attention and popularity of the public. In 1922, the film "Nosferatu" appeared, which was watched

millions of people. In it, the image of Dracula appears for the first time. Since that time, directors have increasingly made films about the cruel Wallachian ruler Vlad Tepes, who became famous not only as a strong and warlike ruler, but also as a man with sophisticated sadistic inclinations. In total, there are a little more than sixty films in which Dracula appears in a major or minor role. It is worth mentioning the creation of director Joe Cheppel "The Dark Sovereign", where the figure of Vlad the Impaler is shown more or less realistic from a historical point of view.

But we only looked at one horror movie character. Many of us, watching TV, have seen much worse than the Impaler. What are the scariest horror movies? Of course, each viewer has his own answer to this question. However, perhaps someone believes that they have not yet watched the most terrible horrors. The list provided here includes just such films.

"Shine" (1980). The protagonist decides to stay in a hotel with his family. But something begins to negatively affect his psyche. In the end, this turns into a tragedy for his family and the hero himself. Something in the hotelto put it mildly, not so.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). The tool mentioned in the title of the film, someone cuts not a tree, but people.

"1408" (2007) The protagonist writes books whose purpose is to dissuade readers of the existence of the supernatural. He is disappointed in religion, is an ardent atheist. Going to write another "horror", he settles in the infamous hotel room. And this makes a fatal mistake.

Wrong Turn (2003). A group of young people got lost in the forest. Trying to get out, they stumble upon the remains of dead people. And soon trouble happens to them.

"Saw 5" (2005). The plot of the film is intriguing and unpredictable. One of the followers of a famous maniac teaches a terrible lesson to five strangers.

"Mirrors" (2008). The policeman is deprived of his service because of his imbalance. He has a hard time finding any job. What begins to happen next is reminiscent of a nightmare, and its end is clearly not happy.

It seems that rapid scientific and technological progress also affects horror films. The most terrible films of the twenties no longer scare anyone, except for small children. Today, we may calmly watch what our ancestors trembled in cinemas. And those horror films that were viewed ten years ago are no longer the most terrible now. Horror films of 2012 are still “relevant” for us. Among the best of them - "Possessed", "ATM", "Possession", "Silent Hill 2".
