How much enchanting attraction in Uncle Remus' Tales! No wonder the 16-year-old teenager Joel Harris (1848-1908) listened to the stories told by blacks in the kitchen to pass the time and have some fun. He then himself worked as a “boy on parcels” on a plantation for shelter and bread, and in the evenings he absorbed the fables of those black slaves whom he would later call Uncle Remus and Mother Meadows in his fairy tales.

How fairy tales entered American literature

After ten years, being a writer, Harris will begin to travel and collect stories about the cunning Brer Rabbit and his family, about the insidious Fox, who cannot catch and eat a very smart hare. But first he worked as a typesetter in a printing house, then as a journalist and, finally, as an editor in various newspapers. He will write essays, humoresques, serious political articles. Together with his family, he will move to Atlanta and begin to reproduce what he listened to with pleasure in his youth. His stories will be reprinted in all newspapers. This folklore of the southern states will be printed in more than one book. Hisbelievable and delightful animals will change the attitude towards children's books.

This will be literature for adults as well. And the numerous clones that will appear in English-speaking countries, such as Winnie the Pooh, and all the heroes of cartoons and movies, are the merit of Joel Harris, whose "The Tale of Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox" gave impetus to the development of this direction. All collections of the writer have been translated into many languages of the world. In Russia, they met in the thirties of the last century. They can be found on the shelves of public and home libraries. These publications are read to holes.

What did mom hear?

One evening, a mother was looking for her son and accidentally looked into the window of a dilapidated hut. She saw the old black good-natured Uncle Remus, next to whom her little one sat comfortably and listened attentively to how deftly, word for word, this black old man puts together the story.

Mom listened to herself. It was a fairy tale about the Fox and the Rabbit. Mom heard the Fox chasing the Rabbit and contriving in every possible way to catch him. And the Rabbit tried to run away from him. The paths of the animals suddenly met on the road. They stand opposite each other. The rabbit is plump, smooth, and the Fox wants to eat it so much that he comes up with such a trick. He assures that Brother Bear advises them to make peace. The rabbit replies: “Come to me, Brother Fox, tomorrow. We'll have lunch together. Fox, of course, agreed. And the Rabbit, upset, galloped home. Sad toldour hero Mother Rabbit, that tomorrow we have to wait for Brother Fox for dinner.

Everyone in the house of brother Rabbit got up early and began to prepare to meet the red-haired guest. They made dinner from delicious vegetables, and suddenly their rabbit runs and reports that a visitor is coming to them. But Fox did not dare to go to them. He pretended to be sick and sent an invitation to dinner to him through Brother Hedgehog. The next day, Brother Rabbit went up to the house of the fluffy, cunning owner and began to ask if he had cooked chicken. “Of course,” the Fox agreed, and brother Rabbit, on the pretext that they didn’t put dill in the hen, gave a goose and quickly ran away. Fox never managed to catch him.

Another evening

Uncle Remus told the boy a story called "The Tale of the Fox and the Frogs". The old man croaked amusingly, as amphibians do when they tempt the red beast to dive into the pond after the turtle. The Fox looks into the water, sees its reflection in it, taken for a fellow, and boldly dives. Then he came to his senses and quickly, until Brother Turtle dragged him to the bottom, got out to the shore.

Another fairy tale about the Fox

Uncle Remus always has a lot of surprises in store. Here, for example, is the story of the resin scarecrow. This is a fairy tale about the Fox, who almost caught Brer Rabbit. The red-haired animal made a little man out of sticky resin, put him on the road, and hid himself and peeps what will come of it. Brer Rabbit runs and politely greets the scarecrow, but it is silent.

He got angry at the ignoramus and decided to teach him a lesson:hit the scarecrow with his paw. She stuck. Then the Rabbit became even more angry and began to beat the useless stuffed animal not only with all his paws, but also with his head. Brother Rabbit is completely bogged down in resin. Then Brer Fox jumped out and let's taunt the caught angry eared and say that they will have a nice lunch today. Uncle Remus suddenly stopped talking. The tale of the Fox and the resin stuffed animal is over. His little listener asks anxiously: "What's next?" "Maybe Brer Bear came and saved the harmless Brer Rabbit?" Uncle Remus slyly suggests and sends the baby home.
