Shutter Island is a psychological thriller filmed by Martin Scorsese based on the work of Dennis Lehane, which appeared in the Russian box office in 2010. The original title of the film in English - Shutter Island - can be translated as "Trap Island".

The actors made the film "Shutter Island" wonderful. The entire ensemble cast deserves attention, showing a decent level of play. Most of the characters are complex and contradictory, so the tasks before them were quite difficult.

Leonardo DiCaprio masterfully plays the main role, while the film was at that time the actor's fourth collaboration with the famous director.

Storyline

The film takes place in 1954. Two investigators, Teddy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), arrive on a remote island in Boston Bay, home to America's only mental hospital. They are sent there to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a dangerous patient. Rachel (Emily Mortimer).

On the first day, the detectives begin to suspect that strange things are happening in the hospital. A gloomy and oppressive atmosphere reigns around, a feeling of fear and understatement. It seems that both doctors and patients are not happy about the appearance of unexpected guests and are hiding something from them.

While the main characters are trying to unravel the tangle of lies, a powerful hurricane begins on the island, and the patients of the clinic stage a riot. As a result of the incidents, investigators remain cut off from the outside world and gradually discover some sinister secrets.

Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio

Hero DiCaprio begins to suffer from hallucinations, and soon it becomes more and more difficult to distinguish fiction from reality. The denouement of the film turns the whole plot on its head and makes you rethink everything that happened on the screen in a different light.

Main character

Leonardo DiCaprio got the highly controversial role of Federal Marshal Teddy Daniels, a widower and war veteran. His character is trying to unravel the plans and secrets of the people living on the island, but at the same time he himself is tormented by constant headaches and tragic personal memories.

According to the actor, Martin Scorsese forced all the participants in the shooting to watch old films for hours in order to feel the atmosphere of that time. The result did not disappoint the director - DiCaprio organically fit into the image. To be sure, you should pay attention to his gait and the manner of smoking, which correspond to the behavior of people at the beginning of the second half of the 20th century.

No wonder it is believed thatLeonardo's talent was fully revealed largely thanks to the participation in the films of Martin Scorsese. In each new picture, the director sets more and more difficult acting tasks for DiCaprio.

In Shutter Island, Leonardo had to portray the fine line that separates a sane person from a mentally inadequate one. It is worth noting that the character of DiCaprio turned out to be very alive. It is impossible not to feel all his fears and experiences, mistrust and pain.

His character throughout the film was haunted by visions caused by guilt and grief. The actor said in an interview that the scenes of dreams and flashbacks, when he sees either the Nazis he killed in the war, or the ghost of his dead wife, were the most difficult for him. Nevertheless, DiCaprio plays in these moments so convincingly that the viewer himself ceases to distinguish between reality and hallucinations.

Suspicious partner

Mark Ruffalo plays the role of Chuck Oul, Teddy's assistant. The actor brilliantly portrays calmness and phlegm against the background of an emotional partner during all the plot twists and turns. In this film, many characters in the finale are not who they say they are. And this character is no exception. For this role in 2011, Mark was nominated for a Saturn Award as Best Supporting Actor.

Psychiatric Doctors

The legendary Ben Kingsley played one of the key figures in the film - Dr. Cowley, the chief physician in the entire hospital. The actor is a perfect fit for the type of hero shrouded in mystery throughout the film. What is it worthonly his sharp gaze with a spark of madness! Ben creates an image of a man with aristocratic mannerisms, but what lies behind them?

He called the film a great symphony in an interview, but noted that the shooting was quite exhausting. He said that Martin created a tense atmosphere on the set with the help of special tricks - unexpectedly changing the angle of cameras and lighting during the recording of scenes. However, thanks to such tricks, the heroes, in a sense, did not even have to play paranoia, this feeling came naturally.

Famous Swedish actor Max von Sydow appears in Shutter Island as an elderly psychiatric doctor, Jeremy Neiring. Remarkably, the artist was 80 years old at the time of filming, but his game is still magnificent. Max von Sydow retained an expressive look that was not at all appropriate for his age.

Prisoner-arsonist

Elias Koteas plays psychopath Andrew Leddis, who is presumably also a prisoner of the dark clinic. In the course of the story, it turns out that the main character Teddy arrived on the island not only to investigate the disappearance of the patient, but also to find the killer of his wife.

Peering into the image of a man with a scar on his face and a strange color of eyes, it is rather difficult to understand that we are looking at Canadian actor Elias Koteas. At the same time, at the end of the film, it turns out that Andrew Leddis is not at all the person whom Teddy imagined …

"Shutter Island": actors playing the roles of secondary characters

Michelle Williams presents the image of Dolores Chanel, Teddy's murdered wife. Her character appears in DiCaprio's hero flashbacks.

Jackie Earle Haley
Jackie Earle Haley

Jackie Earle Haley, best known for his Rorschach character in Watchmen, plays mentally ill patient George Noise. It is he who informs the main character that experiments are being carried out on people in the hospital. Jackie Earl Haley portrays the hero very convincingly and is remembered by the viewer. And this is all despite the fact that he only appears in the episode.

Actor Ted Levine is accustomed to playing villains, gaining particular notoriety for portraying the maniac in The Silence of the Lambs. On a spooky island, his character Warden is the head of security for a prison clinic.

Patricia Clarkson plays the disappeared Rachel Solando, whom Teddy suddenly finds in a cave. She influences the protagonist's understanding of the situation by telling her story. Rachel worked as a psychiatrist in the clinic herself until she tried to tell the world the truth about the cruel experiments in the asylum, after which she was declared a disappeared dangerous patient.

  3. Tense and twisted plot. It is impossible to stop watching, and the finale comes as a surprise even for the most avid movie fan.
