The area on which Stavropol is located passed to Russia as a result of the signing of an amicable agreement with Turkey in 1774. The city is located on the steep slopes of a hill and stretches for ten kilometers, so walking along it is quite a difficult task. If the latter cannot be avoided, then the best solution would be to visit the many preserved sights. For example, museums of Stavropol.
What can tell about the history of the region so exciting, expressive and picturesque, if not art? From early childhood, they try to instill in us a love for culture and explain the usefulness of visiting such institutions. All exhibits of Stavropol museums are diverse. We offer an overview of the most significant of them.
Local History Museum
The history of the Stavropol Museum of Local Lore began on February 24, 1905. At that time it was an institution of the North Caucasus. Since the day of its creation, the public figure Grigory Nikolaevich Prozritelev has been at the head. For a long time the museum was a partner of the statisticalcommittee of the Stavropol province.
About 300 thousand valuable exhibits have been collected in its exposition. At the global level, the paleontological series and its rarities are of great importance. These are the rare relics of a Cetoterium whale, an Elasmotherium rhinoceros, 2 of 5 southern elephant skeletons discovered in the world. In the field of natural history, of significant general scientific interest are: botanical, entomological, zoological and mineralogical collections. About 40 percent of the museum asset is an archive of documentary photographs, fully revealing the entire history of the 20th century.
Museum of Fine Arts
The Stavropol Museum of Fine Arts was opened in December 1961 and opened its doors to the public in November 1962. The idea of its creation belongs to the board of the Stavropol department of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR, as well as art historian A. B. Bendik. The museum is located in the historical part of the city, consists of three buildings connected into one ensemble, which are an architectural monument of national importance.
To this day, these three buildings of the outstanding museum are the main historical artifacts located in the central part of the city. The exhibition space has been converted into two large exhibition halls, where interethnic meetings are held with presentations, lectures, conferences and seminars. In addition, the museum has its own scientific reading room, in the funds of which, to sum up, there are more than three thousandbooks. All this helps the museum to be unique.
