Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) tried to be understandable, interesting to his reader. Following these principles, he has created books that lovers of puzzles and good writing style from around the world constantly return to.
The author's heritage includes not only stories and novels about the famous detective, on the pages of which Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes' brother also live, but in general about 70 books, which not all have stood the test of time. But favorite characters are alive, as well as the atmosphere of the famous house on Baker Street. Surprisingly, letters still come to this address. But it all started back in 1891.
Favorites of the reading public
Having created his first story from the series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", the writer was captivated by charming, authentically created characters. Moreover, no matter what they say about the mutual influence of writers and alleged prototypes, the author believed that an observant analyst - a detective with a pipe, was mostly written off from himself. He was quite passionate, athletic, and the ability to analyze gave him a feeling of the deepestsatisfaction. The older brother of Sherlock Holmes is a very peculiar person who is difficult to get to take an extra step to achieve the goal.
He lived in a very vicious circle: working in Whitehall, the Diogenes Club, where everyone follows the unbreakable principle of less contact with each other, and the home environment at Pall Mall. But since the house is a fortress for an Englishman, outsiders will not be allowed there. The reader, like Dr. Watson, will meet Mycroft at the club. And for everyone, the presence of an older brother in Sherlock Holmes with a seven-year age difference will be an absolute surprise. Watson believed that the detective himself exaggerated the intellectual abilities of his brother, considering them superior to his own. After all, if this were true, then both the public and the police would know about him. And now Holmes leads his faithful companion to get acquainted with his closest relative. How will Sherlock Holmes' brother appear before us?
Appearance of Mr. Holmes Sr
He was very tall, taller than his younger brother, portly, massive gentleman. He had a large face with a look detached from reality, and a high forehead, weighed down by thoughts.
Only a hint of Sherlock's sharp expression remains. Mycroft's eyes are watery, light grey, and his arms are wide and thick, reminiscent of walrus flippers.
In 2013, a movie about Sherlock Holmes was made in England. His brother Mycroft was played by the magnificent, intelligent, ironic actor and writer Stephen Fry, who himself knows how tocreate breathtaking books. For example, his short story "Tennis Balls of Heaven" gained popularity.
In Britain, the talent of this actor is highly appreciated by the audience, but he has yet to conquer the American market. On the basis of serious material, Stephen creates images full of humor, which is very appealing to the British. The character that Fry embodied on the screen turned out to be organic and consistent with the description of Arthur Conan Doyle.
The first joint business of the brothers
It was like this: a Greek translator turned to the brother of a famous detective. He knew everything: the name of Sherlock Holmes' brother, was aware of his reputation. The visitor told a sad story about a kidnapping and starving him, demanding to sign documents on the transfer of property to scammers. In addition, they had his sister in captivity. The Greek translator expected a terrible ending to this story. Holmes decided to take urgent measures and involve the police in order to free the unfortunate man. But first he decided to go home and arm himself. What was the amazement of both Watson and Holmes when they saw that Mycroft Holmes was already waiting for them, who, forgetting about his inertia, decided to join them. In this story, qualities of a brother unexpected for Holmes are manifested - courage and a desire to do justice, and not be an outside observer.
The unfortunate ones, of course, were saved, but the villains managed to escape from the country, taking the captive with them. However, some time later, the detective learned from the Hungarian news that two Englishmen in a fightkilled each other. Nothing was reported about the girl, but Holmes was convinced that it was she who avenged the death of her brother in this way. In the next of four stories, we learn that Sherlock Holmes' brother can transform in such a way that even Watson does not recognize him. The mention of the brother can be found in another story. It is Mycroft Holmes who will financially support the detective for three years, when Professor Moriarty's thugs were chasing him.
Missing blueprints
Mycroft Holmes will take an active part in this story. He is the brain of the British government, its most perfect tool, knowing absolutely everything and able to establish the right relationships between disparate facts from various fields. While the two friends ponder what made Mycroft get together and visit them, "Jupiter" himself, as Holmes called him, appears. A huge man, possessing not only physical, but also tangible intellectual power, was excited. With the death of the clerk, the blueprints for the military submarine were gone. In order to prevent an international conflict, they had to be found as quickly and completely silently as possible. Only two brothers, using all their remarkable ability to effectively solve problems, were able to sort out this complicated story in the shortest possible time. Sherlock Holmes was summoned to Buckingham Palace and awarded a tie-pin with a magnificent emerald.
Why are we still interested in Conan Doyle stories?
The deductive method, built on observation and the ability to bring together the disparate parts of the intellectual "puzzle", attracts the reader more than pouringblood and chilling details of atrocious crimes. Five series of short stories and four novels (A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Valley of Terror) are the setting for Arthur Conan Doyle. Books about Sherlock Holmes allow you to enjoy the bewitching game of the mind of the main character. He always finds a non-trivial solution. Such a look at the problem from an unexpected angle is the reason for the enduring interest in the writer's detective works. His best stories and novels always contain witty and simple solutions to the most complex and sinister mysteries.

Holmes himself did not have a single pet in his entire life. Therefore, the expression "dogs of Sherlock Holmes" sounds somewhat inappropriate. There is also the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles, which is directly related to a hefty dog trained to kill by smell.
