In 1864, the beautiful Katherine Pierce comes to visit the Salvatore family, who immediately sympathizes with Stefan. And this affection is mutual. She, in turn, skillfully uses both brothers - she gives them her blood to drink and makes them keep silent about her secret.
Meanwhile, a vampire hunt begins in the city, led by Giuseppe Salvatore. Stefan Salvatore wants to convince his father of his opinion that all bloodsuckers are monsters, but Giuseppe makes sure that his son's love plays into his hands. He adds vervain to Stefan's drink, harmless to humans and dangerous to vampires. The next time Katherine drinks his blood, she is stripped of her powers and is led to her execution with the rest of the bloodsuckers.
Stefan dies while trying to save his love, but is reborn as a vampire.
