The film "Paranormal Activity" refers to the "found film" genre, which presents the viewers of what is happening on the screen as a video recording of real events, filmed by their participants. This technique is used to enhance the impression of a scary story by giving it credibility. Viewers are usually informed that the owners of the found film are dead or missing. This genre has been around for a long time, but has gained significant popularity only in the last decade. One of the successful projects was the film "Paranormal Activity", the list of all parts of which includes six films, not counting the unofficial Japanese-made sequel.

History of Creation

The author of the famous franchise is an American director of Israeli origin, Oren Peli. Part 1 of "Paranormal Activity" had a record low budget and was filmed within 10 days. Oren Peli did the work of screenwriter, cinematographer and editor. The filming location was his own house. The commercial success of the picture is amazing: the profit exceededinvested in production by 13 thousand times. No project in the history of cinema can compare in this respect with the film "Paranormal Activity". All the parts removed afterwards were less successful commercially. But the fantastical popularity of the low-budget horror film with a banal plot revived the found-film genre. Producers and directors from different countries have created numerous imitations and parodies of this theme.

First part

The film, which marked the beginning of a whole series of stories about supernatural phenomena, was made in 2007. It tells the story of a young family moving into a new home. Their names are Mika and Kathy. The couple have a habit of filming their daily lives with a video camera. They experience the influence of a demon that has haunted Katie since childhood. In the finale, Mika dies, and the main character goes missing. Despite the simplicity of the plot, the picture received positive reviews from film critics. The independent experimental film was an unexpected breakthrough and opened the list of all parts of "Paranormal Activity".

Second part

The following picture was directed by Todd Williams in 2010. As conceived by the creators, it serves both as a background and a continuation of the first part. The main character is Christy, the sister of the heroine of the previous film. After the birth of her son, she begins to notice that inexplicable things are happening in her house. Film materialspresented to viewers as CCTV footage. In some scenes, an amateur handheld camera was additionally used. In the finale, a demon-possessed Cathy, who is presumed missing, shows up and kidnaps her nephew. Christy and her husband die.

Third part

The action of the picture takes place in 1988. The film tells about the childhood of Katie and Christy, the heroines of the two previous parts. At their parents' home, they first encounter a demon that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Their worried family is trying to capture strange phenomena on video camera. The third series was created in 2011 by directors Henry Joost and Ariel Shulman. They also added to the list of all parts of "Paranormal Activity" the next film, shot a few months later.

Fourth part

The plot is centered on Alex, a high school student who lives with her family in the suburbs. She is confronted by supernatural forces behind Katie, who went missing in the first film. The picture contains a remarkable episode in which the heroes are trying to find an invisible demon in the dark using Kinect technology. The film, which continued the list of all parts of "Paranormal Activity", received very restrained reviews from critics. In their opinion, the main drawback of the script is the lack of fresh ideas.

Fifth part ("Devil's Mark")

Director and screenwriterChristopher Landon in 2014 became the creator of the first spin-off of the Paranormal Activity series. He decided not to break the tradition and make a film in the found film genre. The plot has no direct connection with the events of the previous parts. The film tells the story of several high school students who were attacked by members of a mysterious demonic cult. Audience feedback indicates that the film breathed new life into the project, but its box office performance fell short of expectations.

Sixth part ("Ghosts in 3D")

The latest film to date premiered in 2015. He talks about mystical incidents in the life of a young family. After moving into a new house, a married couple discovers a box of old videotapes. The 21-year-old footage captures the ritual that Katie and Christy went through to join the demonic cult. After some time, the family is exposed to supernatural forces. The main goal of the demon is the 6-year-old daughter of the spouses. For the first time in the history of the franchise, 3D visual effects were used in this film.

Prospects for continuation

Audience unanimously recognizes the first film as the best part of Paranormal Activity. As is often the case with sequels, each new series is worse in quality than the previous one. The creators said that the sixth film should be the final one. But it depends only on the interest of the audience how many parts of Paranormalphenomenon can be removed. It's hard to believe that a project that was exceptionally successful in a commercial sense will not be continued.
