He is convinced that the entire inheritance (and it is rather big) will go to the real male heir, even if it becomes an unknown distant relative. Along with the life of the nobility, "Downton Abbey" picturesquely depicts the life and customs of servants and commoners.
Second season
The following episodes introduce the viewer to the realities of the First World War - from the famous Battle of the Somme to the truce concluded in 1918. The rather elderly Lord Grantham, of course, cannot be called to the front, but Matthew Crowley and lackey William express a desire to become volunteers and leave to fight. Not all the inhabitants of the abbey are distinguished by patriotism and the desire to die on the battlefield: for example, Tom Branson is not at all sure that England needs him. But Lady Sybil proves herself to be a real heroine: this graceful aristocrat works tirelessly as a nurse in a local hospital.

1920, the war is over. The careless investments of the Earl of Grantham put the land holdings in jeopardy. Matthew Crowley and Mary are married, but the relationship between them is not ideal: Matthew cannot decide to spend Lavinia's inheritance to save the Abbey.
