History of the theater
The Volkov Theatre, whose history goes back to the 18th century, began its career as a small group of amateur actors. The organizer, decorator, artist, director, and so on was the son of a we althy merchant F. Volkov.
After Fyodor Grigorievich left with his troupe for St. Petersburg at the invitation of the Empress, the business he started continued to develop.
In the 19th century, the Theater. Volkov (then it was called differently) was considered one of the best provincial temples of art. Many great artists started their career here: L. Sobinov, L. Kositskaya, P. Strepetova, I. Moskvin and others. M. Shchepkin and K. Stanislavsky came on tour to Yaroslavl more than once.
The first theater season of the 20th century coincided with the theatre's anniversary. The celebrations dedicated to this event received an all-Russian scale. The best artists of Moscow and St. Petersburg were invited to the anniversary.
In 1911, the Yaroslavl drama received a new building. At the same time, the theater was named after the founder, professional Russian actor F. Volkov.
In the 20s of the 20th century, the troupe received a new name. The drama became known as the Volkov Soviet Theatre. After the collapse of the USSR, the name changed again. The word "Soviet" was excluded from it.
In the 30s the repertoire consisted of works by Russian classics. During the Great Patriotic War, plays on military themes were staged on the stage of the Yaroslavl theater: "Front", "A guy from our city", "Invasion", "Russian people", "Field Marshal Kutuzov", "Boatwoman", "General Brusilov".
