Azerbaijani literature originates from the very birth of the state. The works of early writers use the languages of the Ogur subgroups: Turkic, Caucasian and other dialects. At first, Azerbaijani literature and poetics did not have their own written language and existed only in oral form. The progenitor of Azerbaijani literature is the heroic epic of an unknown author about grandfather Korkud.
The book of my grandfather Korkud
Today it is difficult to say who owns the authorship of this work. It was written down around the 9th century, and found a printed form only by the 14th century. "Kitabi dede Korkud" is a complex poetic work, consisting of an introduction and 18 tales, divided into two parts (Dresden and Vatican). Each part has its own plot and the same characters. It is called the Azerbaijani version of Homer's Iliad.
The main characters are the Oghuz Khan Bayandur and hissons. The first tale is entirely devoted to the praise of the great commander, his skills and strength are sung as divine. Most of the work tells about the structure of the Oghuz tribes, their traditions and folk tales. The names of many ancient settlements of Azerbaijan are also mentioned: cities, fortresses, fortifications and villages.

Vidadi, look at these callous hearts, And for the time that rushes forward without end, look!
To the fate that the villain was suddenly razed to the ground, And look at righteous anger, look at the right hand of the creator!
On the powerlessness of the one whose lamp went out in the morning, And yesterday I evoked the worship of a flatterer - look!
And on this arrogant head that fell to dust
She no longer wears a golden crown - look!
On the one who ordered me to be executed without mercy, Look at the one who turned him into a dead man!
The shah needs four nails for the coffin board, Look at the one who saved the blacksmith from death!
Let Agha Mohammed serve as an example of the fall, The luxurious walls of the palace are empty - look!
Don't look at girlfriend and friend, son and daughter.
Look at the creator of the almighty as a father!
O Vagif, before your eyes the Prophet Mohammed, Look at the chosen one of God and the wise man!

One joker to the miser
He said, laughing in his heart:
I had a strange dream.
Tell me "Good afternoon!"
Well, goodbye, The sweetest person!”
So know: in your house
I ate a churek in my sleep!”
From horror in a sweat
The miser hurries home, Got in and got divorced
With a frightened wife.
Having learned about Kazi
Said: “Having driven away my wife, You might be right
But prove guilty!”
O righteous qazi, So-and-so, name, Dare in my house
Eat a churek in a dream!
I can't forgive;
My soul is on fire!
I pray for my wife, Everything like me.
To take care of my house
Stronger than a castle
So that my breadand in a dream
No one could find it!
Otherwise - fly away, Like fluff, my goodness.
Skein! Here's why
I punished her!"
