In the sixties of the last century, the construction of this structure became a symbol of the scientific and technological progress of the USSR. The height of the Ostankino Tower is almost three hundred meters higher than the height of the world-famous Eiffel Tower. Its project was developed by design engineer Nikolai Vasilyevich Nikitin. In the original version, the height of the Ostankino Tower was 533.3 meters, but today the design has "grown" to 540 meters.
The peculiarity of this grandiose concrete structure is that the TV tower, with its impressive weight (55 thousand tons) and the permissible deviation of the top under the pressure of windy masses of 11.65 meters, can never topple over. The fact is that its center of gravity is located inside its support, limited by a sixty-meter foundation ring, at a height of 110 meters on the very axis of the structure, along the circumference of which, like strings, 150 steel ropes are stretched from top to bottom! Each of them is stretched with seventy tons of force. According to the author's forecasts, this structure should stand for at least three hundred years, even though its official termlife is considered 150 years.
The height of the Ostankino tower is most of all occupied by tourists who have been visiting this place since 1969. And there is something to see here. Inside the structure are numerous lines and channels for television and radio antennas. Most of the interior spaces are halls and laboratories. They are equipped with running water, sewerage and telephone lines.
Seven huge elevators deliver guests and staff of the TV tower to the top, four of them are high-speed ones. The main place for excursions is a circular observation hall, girded with glass, behind which opens an amazing panoramic view of Moscow. It is located at an altitude of 337 meters and is considered the most spectacular observation deck in the capital.
Slightly lower is one of the most famous restaurants in Moscow - Seventh Heaven. Visitors are primarily attracted by the height of the Ostankino Tower. Guests are received by three halls, which are located one under the other. The highlight of this place is that the restaurant literally rotates! The tables stand on a platform that makes a complete revolution around its axis in an hour. The glass walls of the restaurant at the same time allow you to admire the views of the city from all sides. It is especially beautiful here at night.
Modern Muscovites are always ready to tell you how many meters the height of the Ostankino Tower is. After a fire in 2000, when three floors of the structure were completely burned out, and a huge part of the population was left “without TV and radio”, residents of the cityceased to perceive this structure simply as an antenna. The fire destroyed several dozen concrete cables, which ensure the stability of the entire structure, but the tower survived! After that, there were many assumptions that after the restoration this building would still “grow”. True, they did not materialize.
Today this is one of the iconic places for Moscow. And no matter what the height of the Ostankino Tower (this building has long been not the tallest in the world), it is important that it is a perfectly preserved symbol of the era when the capital of Russia, or rather the USSR, was the leader of scientific and technological progress in the world.
