Our article is devoted to such an institution as the academic Maly Theater. In our country, two temples of art bear this name. One of them is located in Moscow, and the other - in St. Petersburg. Both theaters are among the most famous, popular and successful in Russia.

History of the Moscow Maly Theater

The State Academic Maly Theater was opened in the middle of the 18th century by decree of Empress Elizabeth. It was opened at the university. Students took part in the performances. A public theater was created at the university. It did not exist for too long, but it was he who formed the basis of the first permanent troupe in Moscow.

Initially, the theater was private and owned by entrepreneurs. At the beginning of the 19th century, it switched to a state account and became Imperial. The troupe at that time, in addition to dramatic actors, included singers, dancers and musicians. The repertoire included performances of various genres. Not only dramatic performances were shown here, but also ballets and operas.

The Maly Theater changed several rooms and found its permanent home in which it still lives in 1824.

Initially, the word "Small" in the title was not a proper name and was not capitalized. It meant only the size of the building. In the same way as the "Bolshoi" theater was called as such because of the area of the premises that it occupies. Today the word "Small" is a proper name, it is written with a capital letter and is not translated into other languages.

The famous actor Yuri Solomin has been the artistic director of the theater for many years now. The troupe, which has more than a hundred artists, is a huge number of well-known actors.

Every season the theater pleases its audience with several new productions.

Season Premiere

Academic Maly Theater presented several new productions to the public this season. Among them is a performance based on the play by A. N. Ostrovsky "The Heart is Not a Stone".

This is the story of a we althy merchant who falls seriously ill and is about to make a will. He is a serious man, he made a fortune with his wisdom and not without cunning. The merchant is by no means a capricious tyrant.

The hero does not know who to make the heir to his huge fortune. He has a choice - a poor and lazy nephew or a young beautiful wife. Which of them is more worthy to receive the rich man's capital? The merchant's relative is a man greedy for money. The wife ormodest, honest, does not accept the courtship of strangers. But relatives are trying in every way to ensure that the merchant doubts the fidelity and purity of his young wife. In whose favor will the merchant still decide to make a will?

The play was written a long time ago, but does not lose its relevance to this day.

About the Maly Theater of St. Petersburg

The Maly Academic Theater (St. Petersburg) opened its doors to spectators during the harsh wartime. His year of birth is 1944. The troupe was very small, it did not have its own premises. Performances were shown by artists in small towns and villages of the region. The actors did not perform in Leningrad itself.

After 30 years of the theater's existence, E. Padfe, a student of G. Tovstonogov, became its chief director. He invited young talented actors and directors to the troupe. It was he who attracted the current artistic director, L. Dodin, to cooperation. Then the theater began to gain popularity.

Today Maly is one of the recognized leaders in our country. He is known for his productions all over the world. The troupe has already traveled to almost all European countries. Performances of the Maly Theater are awarded prizes not only at home. They received awards in France, Italy, Great Britain.

Almost every year, since 1998, Maly has won the Golden Mask in various categories.

In 1997, a branch of Maly was opened in the city of Kirishi.

The name of MDT haspostscript - "Theater of Europe". The troupe received this status in 1998 by decision of the Assembly. There are only three theaters in the world with this name. One of them is our Small Drama. In addition to him, the top three include the famous Milanese "Piccolo" and the Parisian "Odeon". The assignment of such a status to MDT happened for the reason that he went on tour in almost all corners of the planet. Almost none of the most prestigious and famous theater festivals is complete without MDT.

The Maly Theater actively cooperates with young directors from other countries.

Lev Abramovich is also a teacher. It is his graduates who form the backbone of the troupe.

In addition to rehearsals and performances in the theater, the actors are given classes in vocals, movement and stage speech. Not only novice artists, but already recognized stage masters are required to attend classes.

In 1999 MDT got a second building with a chamber stage. Its hall is very small and is designed for only 50 spectators. The chamber stage acts as an experimental laboratory. Here, young directors and actors practice and try their creative powers.

Lev Dodin

The Academic Maly Theater has been living under the strict guidance of L. Dodin for 34 years now. Lev Abramovich was born in Leningrad in 1944. From childhood he was engaged in the Youth Theater. Then he graduated from the theater institute. L. Dodin's directing career began in 1966. Then he collaborated with various leading theaters in Russia and abroad. Lev Abramovich came to Malyi in 1980. And after 3 yearsbecame not only the chief director, but also the artistic director, and in 2003 also the director. He holds these positions to this day. The performances staged by L. Dodin were marked with awards and prizes. Repeatedly he became the winner of the "Golden Mask".
