Early in the morning, a maid named Lisa knocks on the door to her young lady's bedroom. But Sophia does not immediately respond, because all night long she talked with her lover, Molchanin, who is the secretary of her father, Pavel Afanasyevich Famusov. Famusov appears next to Lisa, who begins to flirt with her, but, fearing that he will be noticed, disappears. Molchanin, leaving Sofya, runs into him, and Famusov wonders what he was doing in his daughter's bedroom at such an early hour.
Left as a widow with Lisa, Sophia remembers the details of the night before. Lisa reminds the girl of her former passion, Alexander Chatsky. Sofya says that he was just her childhood friend, and, comparing him with Molchanin, finds a lot of positive qualities in the latter.

Soon Chatsky himself appears. He asks Sophia about Moscow and in a conversation inadvertently speaks unflatteringly about Molchanin. Sophia is angry. In the evening guests come to Famusov. One of the guests, the imperious old woman Khlestova, shows interest in Molchanin, because he praised her dog. Chatsky immediately begins to be ironic about this.
When the guests begin to disperse, Lisa comes to Molchanin and says that the lady is waiting for him. But he immediately tells her that he is with Sophia to strengthen his position, but in fact he loves Lisa. This is heard by Sophia and Chatsky, who was standing behind the column. Sofya asks Molchanin to leave their house. Servants led by Famusov come running to the noise. He is angry andthreatens to send her daughter to the Saratov wilderness, and Lisa to the poultry houses. Chatsky laughs at his own blindness, at Famusov's like-minded people, at Sophia herself. He leaves his once-native home forever. Famusov is only concerned about what Princess Marya Alekseevna will say about this.
