The American crime drama series The Following, which premiered on the Fox television channel in 2013, tells the story of an FBI agent trying to catch a murderous maniac and members of the bloody sect he created. He is assisted in his investigation by other law enforcement officers and an expert specializing in satanic cults. After broadcasting three seasons, the TV company decided to close the project.

An English literature professor named Joe Carroll leads a double life. During his free time from lecturing in college, he brutally kills female students. Carroll is convinced that he commits crimes for the sake of art. After another murder, he is arrested by FBI agent Ryan Hardy.
Once in prison, Carroll uses the Internet to find individuals with the same inclinations. He organizes a sect of his followers, ready to kill and, if necessary, sacrifice themselves. Carroll manages to escape from prison. Toneutralize the maniac and his fanatical imitators, the FBI calls on Agent Hardy to help.
Main characters
The main characters were embodied on the screen by a talented team of actors from the series "Followers". The role of the charismatic professor-murderer was played by Briton James Purefoy. His character is a big fan of romanticism and admires the works of Edgar Allan Poe. In addition to his twisted ideas, Carroll is hell-bent on getting revenge on the man who arrested him.
The role of the brave FBI agent was played by American actor and director Kevin Bacon. Natalie Zia played the role of Claire Matthews, the ex-wife of a maniac professor. She divorces Carroll after his arrest and gains custody of their son. Claire is under police protection as she is being hunted by members of an assassin cult.

The main villain plans to take revenge on Agent Hardy and reunite with his ex-wife Claire. Fulfilling the order of the leader, members of the assassin sect kidnap Carroll's son. This action becomes the first step towards the implementation of a complex plan of retribution, invented by a sinister professor.
Second season
The number of characters and actors of the series "The Followers" is increasing as events unfold. In the second season, the action revolves around a new cult led by Carroll's former accomplice named Lily Gray and her twin sons. Thanks to them, it becomes known that the killer professor, whom the whole world considers dead, in reality escaped death and is hiding in a secret place. Hardy joins the search for Carroll, assisted by his niece Max, who works as a police detective.
Third season
The final part of the series tells about fatethe protagonist after Carroll's arrest. A serial killer awaits execution on death row, and Hardy finds peace of mind and gets used to a peaceful life. FBI agents pursue the remaining at large members of the sect. Even on the day of his execution, Carroll manages to kill two prison guards, which, however, does not stop the execution of the death sentence. After some time, Hardy disappears in order to start a new life as an informal arbiter of justice.

The work of the cast team in this crime thriller was highly appreciated by the majority of viewers. The strongest impression on them was made by a tense duel of positive and negative heroes: a policeman suffering from psychological problems, unable to come to terms with the nightmares experienced in the past, against a perverted, but incredibly smart and charismatic killer. Undoubtedly, the series "Followers" (The Following) boasts a very successful selection of actors. The performers of the main roles literally radiate energy.
The creators of the series are reproached with an unconvincing and unrealistic script, as well as an abundance of shocking bloody episodes unusual for television. While there are twists and turns in the plot that help keep viewers on their toes, overall this thriller feels like a fictional story. However, according to fans of sharp crime dramas, the merits of this series outweigh its shortcomings.
