True, the film is saturated with a lot of unverified or deliberately invented information, which made it more exciting, but less close to reality. The idea to create a film of similar content dawned on Oleg Kompasov, creative director of the Ded Moroz studio, in 2004. Then, filming his next series in Odessa, he drew attention to the fact how little the city had changed since the post-war years. It was then that the idea came to him to film something about the difficult time that came after the end of the war.

On his return to Moscow, he began reading "Gangster Odessa", which described how Marshal Zhukov fought banditry in South Palmyra. It was Zhukov's arrival in Odessa and the conduct of an operation to eliminate crime in the city on his orders that they decided to beat in the film.

In the film "Liquidation" David Markovich Gotsman appears before us as a fearless fighter against crime. Throughout all 14 episodes, he confidently and purposefully fights against gangster groups in Odessa in general and tries to solve a particularly large case, gradually coming to the conclusion that the head of the criminal operation works in the law enforcement agencies of the city.

According to the plot of the film, it becomes known that in the past Gotsman was a front-line reconnaissance soldier and a combat officer. Having received a serious wound in the battle, David Markovich Gotsman spends about a year in the hospital. His biography is silent about how this valiant fighter for justice spent his years before the start of the war. Although in the future, something becomes known to the viewer from the revelations of Dava Markovich to Nonna. But howit is said that it was, it was, but for now … The elimination of all Odessa criminals is the only dream that David Markovich Gotsman has in Liquidation. To draw the image of the main character, a suitable Odessa police officer of the 40s was carefully looked for.

And such a person was found. Information about him was found in the Odessa Police Museum (we are talking about a personal diary). David Mendeleevich Kurlyand, deputy head of the Odessa UGRO (who later changed his patronymic to Mikhailovich), who was born in 1913, is a decent person who loves his city and his work - this, according to the authors of the picture, is the best prototype of Gotsman David Markovich. He began his work in the police in 1934, steadily moving up the career ladder. For active participation in the defense of the USSR Kurland received the Order of the Red Star.

Other prototypes

After careful research, some local historians came to the conclusion that David Markovich -a character with multiple prototypes. According to those who served at that time in the NKVD, David Markovich Gotsman embodied the features inherent in Artyom Kuzmenko, Viktor Pavlov, an operative named Frank, Yankel Fling.

All these people at different times fought crime in Odessa. All of them are remembered as courageous and knowing how to deal with criminals, police officers. And all of them, according to some biographers, helped the director and screenwriter to complement the collecting image of Gotsman, the main prototype of which is still Kurland.

Chic David Markovich Gotsman… Who knows, he would have been so chic if not for the marvelous play of the actor. According to many, this image is one of the best roles of Vladimir Mashkov. However, it cannot be said that she was given to him so simply - he had to sweat a lot. For about a year, Vladimir Lvovich lived in Odessa in order to plausibly embody the image of a native Odessa citizen. He tried to find out everything he could about the Odessa police and crime in the city. And even established contacts with local authorities of retirement age. And for a detailed acquaintance with the prototype of his hero, Mashkov studied all the materials available about him.

By the way, Vladimir Mashkov was familiar with organized crime firsthand. He calls his childhood gangster, and his youth criminal. But if Vladimir learned gangster jargon from people from the criminal world, then in order to master the unique Odessa dialect, which became the main highlight of the picture, Mashkov, as well as other actors, had towork with a linguist. As for the external characteristics, it is interesting that Kurlyand David Mikhailovich has similar features with Mashkov. The role of an employee of the Odessa UGRO in the post-war years brought Vladimir Mashkov not only pleasure and material reward, but also popular and official recognition. For the best male role, he received the national film award of Russia. "Golden Duke" was awarded to him for his contribution to the cultural life of Odessa. No less than the actor must have been pleased with the award of the title of honorary citizen of Odessa, which was also awarded to Mikhail Zhvanetsky.

But, despite the fact that Mashkov studied the local dialect for a year from the native speakers themselves, and even worked diligently with a linguist, some critics argue that the speech of the protagonist, as well as everyone who surrounds him according to the script, is transmitted by false Odessa accent.

So, they point out the wrong intonation of the actors, claiming that a whole new dialect was created on set. In addition, the Odessa “she” is constantly referred to by actors as “sho”. Critics have noticed many other language inconsistencies. Despite the fact that David Gotsman's speech certainly differs from the dialect spoken by Kurlyand, the audience liked it incredibly and gave the picture an unforgettable flavor.

The amount of Odessa humor and barbs in the film, according to experts, just rolls over - the natives of the city do not say that. Apparently, the scriptwriters decided that not a single expression or joke, obtained during their stay in Odessa, should be in vain. The viewer immediately remembered “oil painting”, “deeds for the tonsils”, “tomorrow - tomorrow we'll talk” and “don't comb my nerves”. True, many critics agree that not all expressions were in everyday life among the inhabitants of Odessa at that time, and some did not exist at all.

For example, Gotsman's phrase "gap in the face" is devoid of reasonable meaning,because "to gap" means to fall. And Fima’s expression “throw his head into the manure” Odessans began to use much later than the 40s. Instead of the Odessa word "inferno" it sounds "heat", instead of "bosyavka" - "bosota", instead of "shirmach" - "shchipach". And the expression "I'll take the current run from Duke" should have been changed to "Now I'll take the acceleration from the bridge to the slaughterhouse." In a word, the film "Liquidation" is not quite suitable for judging by the speeches of its characters about the colloquial speech of Odessans. However, the pleasure of watching it is no less.

Monument to David Gotsman

In 2008, the opening of the monument to Gotsman was timed to coincide with the Day of the Police. Impressed by the "Liquidation", Yuriy Lutsenko gave the order to erect the monument. The monument was erected on Jewish Street near the administrative building belonging to the Odessa Regional Police.

In the process of creating a monumental structure, one unexpected and rather important question was born: what should it look like? It was discussed whether it is necessary to give the figure the facial features of Vladimir Mashkov or whether it is better to recreate the face of Kurland from the surviving photographs.

As a result, the work of the sculptor does not have the features of any particular person. According to many, the monument looks quite interesting: a policeman descends down the steps protruding from the wall, holding food on which four pigeons have flocked in his open palm. Others are perplexed: where are the characteristic features by which one can recognize Dava Markovic? If you do not know to whom the monument is dedicated, the sculpture does not resemble the head of the Odessa UGRO, beloved by many viewersat all.
