What could be easier than drawing a flower? A chamomile or a semi-flower will not raise questions for anyone, but drawing a poppy is already much more difficult. What do we know about the poppy besides being red? It is also very delicate, with wide, neat petals and a dense, stable stem. How to reflect in your drawing all the advantages of this amazing flower and not make it look like an ordinary chamomile? Where to start and how to draw poppies for beginners, we will consider later in the article.

Poppy pencil

The simplest thing is to make a pencil drawing without shadows and highlights. Drawing poppies with a pencil is not difficult for beginners. Even a child can do this, the main thing is to know the basic principles. Before you start drawing, you need to clearly understand how your drawing should look.

To get started you will need:

  • A blank sheet of paper.
  • Plain pencils of varying hardness.
  • Eraser.

On the sheet, you determine the center of the image and get to work. It is important to take your time and make the lines very soft so that they can be easily corrected.

Our flower consists of several parts, try to draw each of them separately. How to draw a poppy? It has petals that arethe largest details in the picture. There are only four of them, and they can be located in different ways.

The middle of the flower can be indicated in two ways: going into details, or simply with hatched circles of different diameters, as shown in the figure above.

The stem and leaves have a standard shape and do not require much effort when drawing. The two vertical lines for the stem don't have to be perfectly straight, some error will make your drawing more realistic.

Drawing and coloring

Of course, a pencil drawing, even the most realistic, cannot convey the main highlight of the object - color. So, poppies have a bright scarlet color and coal-black stamens. But before proceeding with such a drawing, you need to make a pencil sketch - draw poppies in stages, as shown in the image below.

You can color the sketch with both colored pencils and paints. When using pencils, you will need colors such as red, white, black, green and pink:

  • Black will serve as an outline to highlight the elements of the flower and designate the stamens.
  • Red and pink will bring clarity to the highlights (do not forget that the flower is alive and its colors have the ability to play in the light).
  • The transitions between red and pink are highlighted in white.
  • Green is the color of the stem, but if we do not draw leaves, then the stem can be left black.

Working with paints is somewhat easier. If this is a soft watercolor, then for the petals it is enough just to dilutered paint with water, which will create a soft transition. For the contour, it is still better to use either a black pencil or a helium pen. But you shouldn't paint it with black paint, it can lead to disaster, and your whole drawing will spread over the paper.

Draw with paints

The greatest difficulty lies in how to draw a poppy fully, with colored paints. Of course, one cannot do without a pencil at the initial stage. Next comes the coloring process. The palette of paints is very large, and the main colors you will need are red, burgundy, black and green.

Strokes can be applied rough, blending transitions when using paint a tone lighter or with the addition of water. When painting with paints such as gouache or oils, you need to feel the color subtly, leaving room for shadows and highlights. And to make it easier to color, the artists pre-plan the elements of shadow and lightening in the drawing.

It is important to do everything in stages, applying colors of the same tone. So, if you are painting a petal, use only shades of burgundy, and when you start stamens and pistils, go to black. The paint is superimposed from a light tone to a dark one. It is equally important when drawing with paints to choose the right brushes.

What are the types of paint brushes

But before choosing a brush, you need to decide on paints, as brushes for different types of paints are different. If you want to depict a delicate, almost transparent flower with thin, weightless lines that breathes, choose the watercolor option. If your flower isrough and contour, choose a harder brush. They all differ in shape, size and material.

The most popular ones are made of squirrel wool. It draws water best and is considered the highest quality.

In second place - speakers and ponies. They are more elastic and more suitable for drawing fine details.

There are also synthetic brushes. They are the driest and most resilient. Such brushes have different shapes for drawing some individual elements, such as architectural ones.

But if you are a beginner, then choose the most convenient option - a quality round squirrel brush.

Good luck with your work!
