Reviews of "Before We Part" suggest that Evans is clearly aiming to make a fresh and engaging film, emulating Linklater's success, but he lacks the skills to make the characters look natural. Most of Brooke and Nick's time is spent with the people who hurt them, it's like going on a date with someone who will only talk about their ex.

Both actors are attractive. They show as much depth and sensitivity as the finely crafted roles. The characters' problems and fears aren't complex enough to be exciting, and ultimately they don't become anything more than just script banalities.
