Against the backdrop of the film Thor 3: Ragnarok released in October 2017, the character of Surtur (Marvel) aroused great interest. And this is understandable, because previously Surtur was not involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For those who haven't read Thor's graphic novel adventures, the emergence of such a powerful anti-hero was new.
Birth and life of Surtur
Who is Surtur? His biography as a character begins in 1963. It was then, in the October issue of the magazine, that writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby introduced him to the plot. They took Surtra, the fire giant from Norse mythology, as a basis.
The Demon Surtur is born in Muspelheim. In the Journey into Mystery comic, it is said that he is hiding at the end of the world and waiting for the end of time to destroy the gods along with the people.
His first meeting with Odin took place on the day when the young god with his brothers Willy and Ve arrived in Muspelheim for a conversation. The demon vowed to destroy the world with the help of the Eternal Fire and the Twilight Sword. Odin decides to break the demonic weapon, in responseSurtur threatens them. Having merged into one powerful being, the brothers come to grips with the demon. The battle goes heavily in favor of Surtur, but the Asgardians break the sword and put out the Eternal Fire. While the demon is recovering, Odin leaves the battlefield. Failing to keep up with their brother, Ve and Willy die.
The fiery demon tried to rebel against Asgard, but was sent deep into the earth for a long time. Surtur later appeared in issue 104 of Journey into Mystery. Being imprisoned, he persuades Loki to unite to attack Asgard. He agreed to overthrow Odin. Loki gives the soul of Eldred's mentor to the demon in order to absorb his energy himself. With the help of his new abilities, Loki unleashes Surtur and the giant Skagg. Together with him, they fall to Earth and engage in battle with Odin, Thor and Balder the Brave. Stopping time, Odin sends all people to another dimension to avoid death. And Surtur at this time is trying to melt the ice at the North Pole in order to flood the planet. With the sword of Odin, Thor stops the fiery demon and lures him to another galaxy, where he imprisons him on a magnetic meteorite.

Surtur (Marvel Comics) is a gigantic demon. The skin and impressive muscles seem to consist of a thick flame. On the head is a crown, similar to huge curved large flat horns, enveloped in fire. The demon's face and body are anthropomorphic, except for claws, small fangs, and flames.
Character
Surtur "Marvel" - cold-blooded, insensitive, merciless to both enemies andallies if they crossed his path. He is destruction itself. Taking revenge on his enemies, never worried if everything around him collapsed. He is sure that he is the Ragnarok that the ancients foretold.
This opinion is fueled by his innate superpower, which exceeds the power of Thor. It simply cannot be destroyed. But despite the malice and goals of the demon Surtur, Thor released him to bring about Ragnarok. In this way, together with Asgard, Surtur destroyed Hela. But this did not rehabilitate him for the earlier harm done. And the demon itself did not take the path of correction.
Superpowers
Surtur's powers and abilities are incredible. If at the beginning he was equal in capabilities with Thor, then after resurrecting from the Eternal Flame he was no equal in the Nine Worlds.
Surtur "Marvel" has the ability to change his body at the molecular level. So, in the battle with Thor, he transforms his fingers into fiery snakes. It can generate heat, fire, and a powerful shock wave. Overcoming large spatial distances for him is also not difficult. In the arsenal of his abilities are levitation and interdimensional movement. In a duel, he demonstrates a high level of swordsmanship, helping himself with a long tail. Unlike many comic book anti-heroes who wield raw power, Surtur is endowed with ancient knowledge and wisdom. Its weak point is a strong cold, which can be used to defeat a fiery demon, but only in conjunction with special magic spells. He may lose the battle withbeings superior in strength and possessing the power of cosmic energy.
Super weapons and gear
According to the canons of comics, such a powerful character as Surtur from Marvel must have no less powerful weapons. The property of a gigantic demon is the Twilight Sword (or the Sword of Doom) made of a special scabrite metal. The latter was mined in the mines of Surtur's domain. This blade is endowed with incredible properties. During the battle, fiery streams can splash out on the enemy. The sword is able to break interdimensional bonds. Morgan Lee Fey created a parallel universe with it. Loki, using the Sword, struck the inhabitants of Asgard with an unknown disease, although it is known that the Asgardians are not subject to any ailments. Also, Loki, using the Twilight Sword, transformed Thor himself into a frog, although he has resistance to such transformations. Combined with the power of the Eternal Flame, the Sword gains double power, the limits of which are not known. Being together at the same time, they increase Surtur's powers.
Inseparable part of Surutra, the source of his life, is the Burning Crown. If you remove it, it fades, becoming like a cold firebrand. Together with the Eternal Flame, the crown gives Surtur additional power.
Interesting facts
Surtur can be seen in the Avengers animated series, voiced by Rick Wasserman. He meets in "The Avengers, the general meeting." The main part of the plot of the painting "Thor: Tales of Asgard" is the story of Surtur's sword "Edelstahl". In the animated film "Hulk vs.", the demon appears as one of theattacking Asgard.
